He'd forgotten to do his paperwork. Again. But who could blame him. He hadn't had a week off in much too long and in his haste to beat the next pending disaster, because there always was one, he'd left the base without submitting the signed form.

Walter was good enough to call him on it and insist that it had to be done. Jack couldn't decide whether that deed would cause Walter to be on, or off his Christmas list this year. Anyway some one was bringing it out to him along with some other paperwork that needed his signature before he left for his cabin.

When he joined for the Air Force he certainly didn't sign up for the mad paper trail that just had to be done. So when he forgot some of it, conveniently or otherwise, could anyone blame him?

He'd decided to wait on the roof. With his telescope he could see whoever was coming, and depending on who it was, he could just invite them up so that he wouldn't have to move. And he planned on doing a lot of that in the upcoming week. Not moving, anywhere, but from his pier to the cabin.

A car pulled up in his driveway. This was unexpected. He was sure Walter would send over an Airman. She opened the door and extended her leg while the rest of her body remained in the car reaching over to the other seat for something.

Before he could stop himself Jack put his hand on the telescope and focussed the lens. As the blue sandal came into focus, Jack moved the instrument up, slowly following the leg that was still extended outside the car. He got sight of the floral print of the skirt that fell flawlessly just below her knees and wondered at the type of material it was since he could literally see the grain of it through the telescope.

Reports now in hand, Sam completely exited her car, closed the door and began to make her way up the walkway to Jack's front door. At this point his mouth refused to make any sound to get her attention, working in league with his wayward eyes and hands.

He lifted his head from the scope as Sam began to walk and then quickly returned his focus through the lens. Her method of walking was like everyone else's, one foot in front of the other, but as Jack's focussed on the swaying of her skirt, the way her hips moved when she stepped on her left foot and then on her right, he wondered if she did that on purpose or whether she was even aware of the effect she created.

The lens moved from the curve of her hips and up her back, strong, but certainly feminine, her shoulders completing the perfect proportioning of her body. He saw her neck only partially covered by her blonde hair bobbing slightly as she took her steps.

Suddenly Sam stopped in mid stride. Again Jack pried his head from the telescope to look with his natural eyes and then returned his gaze through the scope.

Without explanation Sam turned slightly, as though she'd heard something, then without warning she looked directly at him, finding his eyes through the lens. Jack couldn't stop the short gasp that escaped his mouth, but could not force himself away. Her expression at first was one of bewilderment, but as they looked at each other, with the detail the strength of the lens provided, he saw it change slowly, deliberately and she smiled at him. Not the big bright smile that he still hadn't quite gotten used to. This was a borderline seductive 'Caught you' smile, and it floored him.

His head moved quickly and he stood before beckoning her up to the roof. Sam changed her direction and began walking toward Jack's position. Jack waited for her to come up as he replaced the cap on the lens, deliberately pointing it skyward before turning around and putting his hands in his pockets.

Sure she'd caught him looking at her but he didn't want her to think he had the telescope only to spy on people. That's not the purpose he'd bought the top of the line instrument. At least, not initially.
