Javert's Suicide
Javert walked in the dark across the bridge. He looked down at the Seine. The lights of Paris twinkled in it. How calm and peaceful it looked. Peaceful... if only that was his state of mind. A thousand different thoughts were drifting through the inspector's mind. Why did Valjean spare his life? Why had he been so cruel to Valjean? Why should he, Javert, live? What was good? What was evil?
He sat down on the cold, stone bridge. Jean Valjean could've killed him right there. Why hadn't he? It was the obvious way to save his own skin. With Javert out of the way, Valjean would be able to finally live a normal life. Had Jean Valjean, the criminal 24601, really changed into a decent, honest man? A man who would not hurt even his worst enemy, in that case, Javert?
Why did Valjean deserve to be treated so cruelly by Javert in the first place? All he'd done was stolen a loaf of bread! ...and tried to escape prison multiple times. Had he really learned his lesson, or was he only pretending to be a good man?
What else was there for Javert to live for? What else was there to live for but abiding the law? Should he just surrender now or keep on chasing Valjean?
What was good and what was evil? Javert used to know the answers, but now they are lost in shadows...
These thoughts were making him mad, insane. Thinking of his sad life, Javert began planning what to do next- follow the law and arrest Jean Valjean and put a stop to his nonsense once and for all, or escape the world he knew, and let Jean Valjean live.
He looked down again into the river, the peaceful, calming river. What would it be like to dive into the depths of the river and end this madness? It must be either Valjean or Javert in the end...
Javert stood up. He looked up at the sky. The once bright and inspirational stars suddenly seemed black and cold. He had decided what he must do.
"There is no where I can turn," He said to himself. "There is no way to go on..."
And he threw himself into the river below.
