Summary: They wonder.
He thinks of her, and he wonders.
He imagines holding her hand in public, enjoying an intimate dinner for two.
He imagines sharing everything and anything as they bare their souls to each other, talking, laughing and crying together as the night slowly gives birth to the dawn.
He wonders what it will feel like placing a circle of gold on her finger, gifting her with his vows to love, honor, protect and cherish her for the remaining days of his life.
He wonders how silky smooth her skin will feel against his fingertips as they glide over her body in a long and loving caress.
He imagines the tingling vibration dancing across his lips as she moans while he kisses the column of her throat.
He wonders just how long the sweet taste of her will linger in his mouth after they make love.
He imagines her falling asleep against his body, warm and soft, cocooned in his arms.
He imagines the joy of being the father to her children, having a family all his own, finally belonging.
She watches him, and she wonders.
She sees the loving, caring and passionate man that lies beneath the fierce, angry façade that is his barrier against the world and wonders how long it will take her to tear it down.
She imagines the beauty of their friendship blossoming and maturing into something more.
She imagines the joy and humility of her being his soul mate and him being hers.
She wonders what it will feel like to be loved wholly and completely.
She imagines the bliss of feeling him against her, inside her and around her as they become one, never wanting to leave the warmth and security of his embrace.
She imagines the beautiful faces of their blue-eyed, dark-haired children.
She imagines being right where she belongs.
They pass each other frequently from day to day, exchanging superficial niceties, never indulging the thought.
Today was different. They each crossed the courtyard, meeting in the middle, and as blue and grey gazes meshed, they both wondered aloud "What if…"
A/N: Cliché-ridden angst is not usually my thang, so I am not quite sure where this came from. Maybe it is meant to counterbalance all of those smutty little one-shots I've been writing lately. In any event, it was written from the heart, and I hope you enjoyed it.
