So I wrote this story back in 2007 and got a pm requesting I redo it. Add more detail, make it more how do you say…. readable I haven't thought about this story since then but have decided to edit this story (I normally don't do something like this). It has the same ending and events just edited to be a much fuller story. Please enjoy.
Summary; Kyo and Tohru are in their last year high school and during valentines' day they admit their feeling for each other. What happens when everyone in the Sohma family finds out about their secret love? Re-done.
The classroom wasn't as crowded as it normally was by this time of day. Only a few students sat in there little groups while Tohru walked over to Arisa and Hana who sat near the window. Tohru had ran ahead of Kyo and Yuki today to make sure she got to the class room first. She didn't want Yukis fan girls to rush her like they had last year, demanding to know if she had chocolates for Yuki, and as for Kyo, well.. she wasn't ready to see him just yet today.
"Good Morning everyone! Happy Valentine's day!"Tohru had always been very considerate of days like this. Whenever there was an occasion where she could express how much she appreciated her dearest friends, she always took it. Over the years that she'd been in high school, things always repeated themselves. She would spend a large amount of money on chocolate and then be a little stressed for cash when she needed to pay tuition again ( she was on a payment plan due to the lack of steady income). But Tohru never seemed to mind this, it was all worth it to her in the end. So when she handed Arisa and Hana their Valentine's day chocolate, she couldn't have been happier to see them smile.
"Oh Tohru again? You really don't have to keep doing this every year"Arisa looked down at the beautifully wrapped box Tohru had given her; she had become aware of Tohrus financial issues not long after Tohru had moved into the Sohma house. But she could never turn down Tohru, especially after she had worked so hard to get these chocolates.
"Yes we still haven't repaid you for last year"Hana gestured the chocolate back to Tohru but when she saw that caring smile start to appear on Tohrus face, she knew it she had lost.
"No, No, No, please keep them, you two have always been such wonderful friends to me that it's the least I can do"An with that Arisa and Hana let out a sign before accepting the chocolates gratefully.
"Are you giving carrot top and prince? You gave them both those tiny truffles last year right?"Arisa watched out the window as Tohru took her seat, she had found it odd to not see the Yuki and Kyo trailing behind after her, they normally never let her out of their sight until they reached school. So when she saw Yuki and Kyo walk through to gates now, from her seat at the window, she was a little surprised.
"Last year I got them both some tiny truffles but this year it's a surprise!"Tohru couldn't help but be a bit excited, she had put some real thought into their valentine gifts this year.
"I sense Kyo's odd waves coming from….up there, and the Prince…. Seems to be surrounded"Hana pointed upwards in the direction of Kyo and then out the window where it could be seen that Yuki had was in the middle of backing away from all the girls trying to give him chocolates, he looked like he was about to be consumed by them.
"The prince doesn't look like he'll be free anytime soon"Arisa commented as her and Hana continued to watch Yuki trying to kindly reject each girls chocolates after his hands became full.
"Indeed, Tohru perhaps you should go see Kyo first"Hana suggested as she pointed up to the ceiling again. It had become well known that Kyo could be found on the roof, normally surrounded by cats. Everyone thought he was some sort of cat whisperer.
"I think you're right, I'll just go see Kyo first"Tohru reached into her school bag and removed a very carefully wrapped box that was topped with an orange ribbon.
"Be careful"Arisa and Hana both chimed as Tohru disappeared in the direction of the staircase that would lead her to the roof.
It didn't take long for Tohru to find her way to the roof top. All she would ever really have to do was listen for the sound of cats meowing and wind, it always seemed to lead her to the right door where when she opened it, she would be met with the blue sky. An today was no different, she stood outside on the roof top and then climbed up the small ladder that would take her onto the top of the schools control room.
"Morning Kyo, Happy Valentine's day"Tohru pulled herself up onto the last step to find Kyo laying there with some cats and staring up at the sky. He looked so tired and peaceful.
"Don't scare me like that!"Kyo sat up so quickly that one of the cats had freaked out and started hissing at Tohru before quickly calming down. Kyo never expected it when Tohru would come creeping up on him like that, he could never hear her walking once he was lost in his own thoughts. Even at home on the roof top there, although the ladder was so long, he never heard her walking up it.
"Sorry Kyo, I thought you heard me call your name"Tohru confessed, she never liked making Kyo mad, and sometimes with his temper, that seemed to be the only emotion he had towards her. But he was never angry with her, only with himself for not knowing how to react better.
"What are you doing up here anyway?"Kyo asked trying to avoid any eye contact with the beautiful girl in front of him. He hated how his feels made him do such irrational things like yell at her. He just wanted to be near her all the time, to hold her to…to do something besides be her 'best friend' even Yuki was her 'best friend' and it made him sick to think that he was on the same plan as Yuki.
"I have a surprise for you; Happy Valentines day"Tohru placed the same gift into Kyos open hand and almost felt her heart explode when she felt how warm his hands were. Had he always been that warm? And had he always looked so…well, she always knew that Kyo was good looking, but lately she seemed to be thinking of him more and more.
"Thanks but… how can you afford this?"Kyo had told Tohru last year not to get him anything since he saw how many hours of overtime she ended up doing to pay for it. He had hoped maybe this year she had managed to save some money and that she wouldn't be repeating the same thing as previous years.
"I just saved a little extra this year"Tohru admitted, she had managed to save a little bit pf money from each pay check to not make things so hard for herself this year. An since Momijis father owned the building she cleaned, he had even given her a raise so that Momiji would have more time to spend with her. He had become very attached.
"Oh hello Mister Kitty, how are you? You're so cute!"Tohru cooed over the small kitten that sat meowing next to her, it rubbed it's side against her purring, looking for attention. Its adorable mouth opened again to let out a sound as Tohru let it crawl up into her lap.
"Kyo isn't he adorable?"Tohru had always had quite a thing for cats, ever since she was small she loved how adorable they looked. They tiny noses and the way they would lick their paws was always so cute, not that she didn't also enjoy dogs, she'd even come to enjoy mice since they would sometimes follow Yuki around the house.
-Chiming of the School Bell-
"I guess it's time for class, I'll see you back at class Kyo!"Tohru stood up and brushed the wrinkles out of her skirt before heading towards the ladder. She caught sight of Kyo standing up behind her, he was never actually late to class but always showed up just before the teacher would call his name.
"Tohru wait, I've got something for you"Kyo reached his hand out and lightly gripped her arm. He had never been good at this. Whenever he would get embarrassed, he's always look angry. So when Tohru looked back at him she opened her mouth a little surprised, she didn't think she'd done anything to upset him.
'Did he really not like the chocolate? Oh no! Maybe it's the color wrapping I picked!'Tohru panicked slightly, she hated making Kyo upset.
"Here, Happy Valentine's day"Kyo said handing her the small pink box that he'd kept hidden in his pocket. He was planning to give it to her on white day, but part of him really couldn't wait for it, when he had found it during one of their very rare outings to the mall ( he'd only gone because Shigure was having a book signing and needed Kyo to help carry some of the books over), he just couldn't help but think of Tohru.
"But Kyo its tradition that the girl gives something on Valentine's Day! Besides you've already given me so much I couldn't possibly accept anything more!"Tohru could feel her face turning red as she became flustered by the sudden gift, when was the last time a boy had given her a gift like this? Sure they gave things to each other for Christmas and birthdays but Valentine's Day was so much more romantic. And that made this a romantic sort of gift.
"Just open it would ya!"The ever impatient Kyo couldn't have been more impatient now, he wanted Tohru to just open the gift he'd gotten her. He's heart was practically pounding out of his ears with anticipation of her response.
"Yes! Thank you very much!"Tohru jumped slightly at his response but then quickly began to unwrap the gift, she took of the pink paper and removed cotton inside the small box to reveal a very small but adorable ring ball charm hanging from a silver chain. It's nori colored in with small stones of onyx and the rice made of a beautiful white gold, and on the back there was the smallest red ruby, a little umi on its back. It was Tohru, with that little special spot on her like she had told Kyo he had before.
"Kyo I don't know what to say"Tohru had never received a gift like this before. It was beautiful, it was wonderful it was so thoughtful that she couldn't express her feelings in on sentence.
"Well do you like it or not? It's okay if you don't"Kyo could feel the disappointment starting to form in his chest, he had really thought that he'd picked something wonderful but when Tohru was just staring at it, he didn't know what to say.
"No Kyo! I love it! I've just never received a gift like this before"Tohru ran her finger over the beautiful little rice ball.
"Do you think I could wear it now?"Tohru asked a bit nervous to wear it, she'd never worn jewelry before and was scared of losing it, but it'd be a shame not to wear something Kyo had obviously put a lot of time into.
"It's your gift"Kyo responded as he watched Tohru take the necklace out of its box. She treated it like it was made of glass and would shatter at any moment. He watched as she carefully placed it around her neck and closed the clasp, she pulled her hair out slowly from under the chain and ran her fingers around the little rice ball. She looked so beautiful.
-Chiming of the tardy bell-
"Oh no! We better get going"Tohru closed the box quickly and reached out to grab Kyos hand so that she could pull him along with her to class. But as she reached out he grabbed her hand mid-way, causing her to stop and look at him. There was an intense look in his eyes, one she had only seen during his fights with Haru. He was concentrated on something.
"Wait; I need to tell you something"Kyo loosened his grip on her arm and had slipped down to gently hold her hand. She was always so warm, so bright, so…happy, it made all his terrible thoughts go away, all his fear of being lonely disappear. She was the one.
'Come on say it…say it'Kyo mentally coached himself as Tohru gave him her full attention. Her big brown eyes staring at him, patiently waiting for him to continue.
"Tohru, I've spent a lot of time thinking about this. I've been trying to deny it because of that dam rat and the curse since I know that this wouldn't work but I want to tell you, I want you to know! I don't care about that stupid rat Yuki and if he beats the living crap out of me or if Akito tries to lock me up but I need you to know that..; I love you"There it was, the burden that Kyo had been carrying with him for the past year, he had fallen in love with Tohru, ever since she had accepted him, he had slowly began to realize his love for her. When she would come to hang the laundry in his room, he'd watch her, loving the way she'd sing that sweet song and when she'd clean the house he'd smile to himself as she danced around. He loved her.
"Kyo I.."Tohru was speechless at first, she had never thought that Kyo would fall in love with her. He always seemed so distant and far away when they spoke, and he never seemed all that happy she was around. So she never gave it the chance, even the thought that one day he would love her.
'Do I love Kyo?'Tohru thought to herself quickly so that she could respond to him, did she love him? Yes she did, was it in that way? Was it?. She loved the way he would help her when she was sick, how he'd protect her from other man, how he'd carefully watch over her when she did chores, she loved how he'd follow behind her and Yuki when Yuki would come to pick her up, she loved how he… she didn't love her he did things.. she loved him. Yes, she loved him too.
"I love you too Kyo"Tohru reached forward on instinct and wrapped her arms around him. She had forgotten for the moment about the curse and only thought about how wonderful it would be to hold him, she wanted to hold him. But then as she wrapped her arm around him, she remembered and braced herself to fall down onto the floor with a cat crushed under her.
'Where's the..poof?'Tohru opened her eyes suddenly as she felt nothing but Kyos warm body against her, there was no poof of smoke, no hitting the floor, no angry cat lying under her; there was just Kyos uniform against her cheek and the sound of his heart beating against her ear.
"You didn't transform"Tohru said in shock. She stared up at him as tears began to swell up in her eyes. She couldn't believe it.
"Yeah I didn't; do you think the curse is broken?"Kyo looked down at Tohru as she released him, he looked down at his hands and felt his head for cat ears, but there was nothing.
"I'm so glad"Tohru was sniffing now as she whipped the tears from her eyes, this was her greatest wish come true. Kyo was free, everyone was free. And for the first time, she felt Kyo wrapping his arms around her, she thought that she'd never truly know this feeling.
"Hey stop crying, you'll make me look like bad guy"Kyo couldn't help but smile either, there he was. Holding the girl that he had loved for so long as she cried in his arms. He could finally hold her, console her, maybe even kiss her?
"Hey you two! The teacher said if you're any tardier he's going to call your guardians!"Arisa voice came calling from the bottom of the ladder where she could make out Kyos orange hair and Tohrus brown locks standing fairly close.
"I can no long sense Kyos strange wave length or Prince Yukis"Hana commented as she closed her eyes after having felt some strange loss in her field wave lengths. The last thing she felt was Kyos strange wave length and Tohrus mixing together for a moment.
"Sorry we're coming down now!"Tohru called as she moved away from Kyo, her cheeks were red now as she could feel the embarrassment getting to her. She had been hugging Kyo so freely and her friends might have seen! Not that she seemed to mind, when she came down from the ladder with Kyo not far behind her, they both looked very happy
"So carrot top finally confessed huh?"Arisa commented as they all began to walk back towards the staircase together. Her sudden comment made both Kyo and Tohru freeze. How had they known?
"Arisa I believe you owe me lunch today"Hana commented as Arisa let out a sign of disappointment, they made a small bet about why Tohru was taking so long to get Kyo and Hana seemed to have won. It was a light hearted move that left Tohru was a nervous laugh and a flustered Kyo following behind them.
"Fine I'll treat you to miso and fish in the cafeteria"Arisa and Hana continued their way down the staircase as Tohru began to slowly trail behind waiting for Kyo to catch up to them. He had been keeping his distance a bit, he didn't like the idea of Hana shocking him or Arisa threating to rip him apart if they suddenly decided to disapprove of their relationship. It didn't take too long before Arisa and Hana were ahead of them, leaving Tohru and Kyo to walk behind them side by side
"Hey Tohru"Kyo looked over at her and watched as she jumped a bit surprised, she didn't know what to say to him now that they had confessed their feelings for each other. She had never been in this situation before.
"Y-yes Kyo"Tohru stuttered quickly trying to answer him as clamly as possible. Has he always been this close? Tohru felt like he had gotten closer since they'd been walking to class
"From today on, you and I…let's start dating okay? We can go do something after school today before dinner"Kyo extended his hand to reach hers, giving her hand a light squeeze as a strike of red crossed her cheeks and she nodded.
An so it began.
Okay I redid the first chapter and I like it, it's much better. So I wouldn't recommend reading the rest of this story until I fix it. You can feel free to check and see if the next chapter is redone.
