In tribute to this line, and to celebrate the new official translation
Also, I believe earth-shines deserves all the love today :)
Thank you to professor-maka for eyes, and Happy April Fools Day
She crept up behind him as he swayed in tune with his melody. The seat creaked when Maka sat down, pressing herself closer to Soul's body. His soft music continued on smoothly while his body shifted to make more room for her.
His feet were light as he coaxed the foot pedal to play his song, and she watched as his smile grew wider, almost jubilant. Though she couldn't understand completely, there was clear love that was etched into his face. Maka waited until he slowed, then leaned on his shoulder.
"I love it when you play the piano."
He chuckled, "Doesn't it sound amazing?" It was like his fingers caressed the white keys, gliding down the smooth surface. His soul seemed connected to them, willing the instrument to play as easily as she used his bladed form when they battled side by side in harmony.
They stayed like that as Soul transitioned to the next song. It was more dynamic and exhilarating, like the thrill of the battle.
"I love this kind of rush." He laughed to himself, quickening the pace into a staccato.
She happily closed her eyes, simply basking in his radiance. Tranquility didn't come to him often, but when it did, he was almost like a whole new person. Lately, Soul had been spending more and more time with his baby grand. Although it wasn't every day, he did devote an hour or two to his piano when he had a chance, filling their apartment with serenity. Clearing a part of the living room for it had been worth it. His wavelength was showered in happiness whenever he passed by.
When his song came back to a crawl, Maka glanced up at his face. His unguarded expression made her heart flutter and her mouth dry. She turned her chin up, inching closer and closer to his face, parting her lips slightly.
"Soul…"
"Hmm?" He traced a finger on a black key. "Even this music is something we made together."
"Yeah…"
"Isn't that right—"
"Mmhm…"
He dodged her kiss in one fluid motion, bending down to peck the keyboard. A dischord rang out as he rubbed his cheek against them, as if he were a puppy. Maka shakingly looked down at him and sputtered incoherent syllables.
"Baby, you're the only one for me," Soul crooned.
"What the fuck, Soul."
"Oh hey, I didn't notice you there. Who let you sit on Natasha's chair."
Maka blinked, then she gingerly peeled herself off from the chair and stiffly took a step back, watching as Soul was patting the top of the piano.
"Do you mind?"
"Hmm? Mind what?"
"Oh my death, Soul. Would it kill you to pay attention to me?"
Soul lifted his head up to side-glance her. "Pay attention to what?"
Her eyes darkened and her mouth twisted into a scowl. She lifted her arm above her head, and nodded towards the middle of the piano. With no response from Soul, Maka let out a battle cry, bring down her arm with all her vengeful fury, only to be met with a hard skull as Soul dove in between her and the piano. He crumpled on top of it, knocked out cold with his limbs draped over the side.
She leaned towards his prone form, close enough to be barely brushing against his ear, completely unsurprised by his sacrifice. "It's gunna be a long time before we make music together again," she whispered, before slumping her way back to her room, rubbing her temples to fight off an upcoming headache, while Soul was left sprawled over his baby grand piano, Natasha.
