Never Grow Up

Dan was in the car. Nellie and Amy were going to drop him off at College. He and Amy didn't have the same college. Dan had his iPod with him. Amy stared out the window. Amy had thrown a fit when Dan said he'd just go with Hamilton. Dan didn't understand why Amy and Nellie were just so protective. I was Eighteen now anyway.

I can take care of myself. A song came on his iPod. It was unfamiliar to him. It just played. Then the lyrics came. He hummed along softly.

Your little hands wrapped

Around my finger and it's

So quiet in the world tonight

Well, it's always quiet at night...

Your little eyelids flutter cause

You're dreaming so I tuck you in

Turn on your favorite night light

Dan flash backs to when he was seven... Amy always tucked himin.

To you, everything's funny

You got nothing to regret

I'd give all I have honey

If you could stay like that

I'd rather not be like that...

Oh darling don't you ever grow up

Don't you ever grow up

Just stay this little

Why should I, I mean, growing up will be so much fun...

Oh darling don't you ever grow up

Don't you ever grow up

It could stay this simple

What's simple? Even if I stay a kid, I would still have leave... Right?

I won't let nobody hurt you

Won't let no one break your heart

No one will desert you

Just try to never grow up

Never grow up

I can take care of myself... I've been trained...

You're in the car on the

Way to the movies and you're

Mortified your mom's dropping you off

To college, actually, and my mom's not even here...

At 14 there's so much you can't do and

You can't wait to move out

Someday and call your own shots

Exactly...

But don't make

Her drop you off around the block

Remember that she's getting older too

Who? Nellie or Amy? But yeah, I guess...

And don't lose the way that you dance

Around in your PJ's

Getting ready for school

But I don't use my Pj's anymore...

Oh darling don't you ever grow up

Don't you ever grow up

Just stay this little

Oh darling don't you ever grow up

Don't you ever grow up

It could stay this simple

It's never simple...

And no one's ever burned you

Nothing's ever left you scarred

And even though you want to

Just try to never grow up

I want to move out... Leave the hugs, and the mental chats, the waffles and the Zucchini curls... I want to grow up!

Take pictures in your mind

Of your childhood room

It's like a permanent tatoo on my mind...

Memorize what it sounded like

When your dad gets home

IF he gets home...

Remember the footsteps

Remember the words said

And all your little brother's favorite songs

If I had a little brother, but I guess same goes for my older sister...

I just realized everything I have

Is someday gonna be gone

So here I am in my

New apartment

In a big city, they just dropped me off

Just a few more minutes before that happens...

It's so much colder than I thought it would be

So I tuck myself in, and turn my night light on

I sure hope Amy won't find out that I brought my night light...

Wish I'd never grown up

I wish I'd never grown up

Oh, I don't wanna grown up

Wish I'd never grown up

Could still be little

Oh, I don't wanna grow up

Wish I'd never grown up

Well, I'm starting to dread the idea of College now... I just want to stay with Amy... at HER College...

It could still be simple

Oh darling don't you ever grow up

Don't you ever grow up

Just stay this little

Oh darling don't you ever grow up

Don't you ever grow up

It could stay this simple

Won't let nobody hurt you

Won't let no one break your heart

And even though you want to

Yeah, I wanted to… as in past tense...

Please try to never grow up

Oh woah, woah

Don't you ever grow up

Ohh (never grow up)

Just never grow up

"Dan! Snap out of it... We're here!" Amy said."Yeah, Yeah... Wait" Dan said as he tried to haul his back pack out of the seat. His other stuff were easier to carry.

Dan waved goodbye to them and turned around. The place was huge... The dorm was just to his right. Dan took a few steps, then turned and ran. He hugged Amy and Nellie and said.

"I'm going to miss you..." "We'll miss you too kiddo, and remember to call us!" Nellie called after him.
