A/N: Who even knows what this is, honestly? One-shot set season one.
Hayley exited the bathroom, freshly showered and relaxed. The latter of these lasted only until she entered her bedroom, where a certain Original that she could more than do without sat on her bed.
"Klaus," she said blandly.
"I keep forgetting to thank you for your constant enthusiasm, Hayley," he quipped. "Always a pleasure."
She rolled her eyes at his words, running her comb through her hair. "You didn't answer the question," she ignored. "What d'you want?"
"I just want to talk to you," he told her, standing.
"You never want to 'just talk to me,'" Hayley said in response, her tone blunt. "What happened this time?"
"Deductive little wolf, aren't you? Well, if you must know, it's about my brother."
Hayley looked at him carefully in the mirror. "Is that right?" she murmured, setting down her brush and turning to face him. She braced herself against the dresser with her hands.
"Too be quite honest, I'm concerned," he told her seriously.
"What else could there be for you to be concerned about? Anything that irritates you ends up dead," said Hayley. "Surely that should be the case for whatever nuisance has come up now."
Klaus paid no mind to Hayley's sarcasm. "Oh, that's where you're wrong. Because this time, it's you I'm worried about, love."
Her eyebrows rose sharply. "Oh, really? What have I done wrong?"
"Oh, nothing, nothing, really. It's what I believe you won't do, actually." He smiled impishly, and Hayley's eyebrows rose further. "To be quite frank, not Elijah."
Hayley nearly choked on her own spit. "Excuse me? What the hell are you talking about?"
"Well, little wolf, I have good reason to think that you hold some feelings for my dear brother, and that you're mistaking his attentions for affections."
She shook her head, agitated. "I'm not following."
"Of course you are." He smiled. "You're a smart one. You know exactly what I'm talking about. You believe Elijah's kindness towards you to be something more… intimate, if you will. Well, I have news for you, love, some of which you may already be well aware of: Elijah likes to play hero. He entertains himself this way, you see. And as soon as you have that baby and are back to your old feisty ways of pushing people away, he won't care anymore. Because you, little wolf, won't need any more saving."
Hayley didn't know what to say. What could she respond with? That he was wrong, that Elijah would care? He didn't only want to save her? Were she being honest, if she hadn't become pregnant with his brother's child, Elijah wouldn't have had a reason to even meet Hayley. They wouldn't even know each other, let alone be… whatever the hell they were. So she kept her mouth shut, knowing that for whatever she snapped at Klaus, he'd have an even better retort, as usual.
"Are you done?" she asked him quietly. "Because I'm exhausted."
His work done, Klaus smiled. "Of course. I'll leave you too it. Good night, little wolf." With that, he left her alone.
