Strawberries
"Mr. Frodo! Mr. Frodo!"
The cries from outside Frodo's window startled him awake.
"What is it Sam?" Frodo replied, rubbing the fog of sleep from his eyes.
Samwise Gamgee leant on the windowsill of Frodo's bedroom, "I've seen it!"
"Seen what exactly?" Frodo asked, getting more than a bit irritable now.
"The first strawberries of the year" Sam replied with awe in his voice.
"You woke me up for that?" Frodo said incredulously.
"'Tis a beautiful thing to see Mr. Frodo" Sam said.
Frodo got the hint, "Alright, alright, I'll come and pick them with you."
"Okay Mr. Frodo," Sam beamed, "I'll meet you outside soon."
Sam ran off and Frodo threw his bedcovers back with a sigh, he had been looking forward to sleeping in that morning.
The first strawberries of the year had always excited Sam; Frodo knew there was little his dear friend loved more than witnessing the growth of new things.
Frodo pulled on some clothes and made his way to the kitchen, were Bilbo sat at the table having breakfast.
"Good morning Frodo," Bilbo said, "No need to ask why you're up so early this morning, you could hear that Sam on the other side of the Shire."
Frodo smiled, "I better not keep him waiting any longer then Uncle, goodbye."
"Goodbye Frodo, enjoy those strawberries" Bilbo replied.
"I will" Frodo called over his shoulder.
Sam was waiting outside the front door, fidgeting in excitement, when Frodo came out the front door.
"Come on Mr. Frodo!" he said breathlessly.
Frodo followed Sam out the front gate, unable to contain his smile at Sam's childish excitement.
Sam led Frodo across the fields to a large hill.
"How much further Sam?" Frodo said, a little impatient.
"Just up this 'ere hill Mr. Frodo" Sam replied.
When they reached the top of the hill Sam ran to a small clump of trees.
"Over 'ere Mr. Frodo" he called back.
Frodo walked over to the trees in time to see Sam's beaming face crumble.
"They're gone, Mr. Frodo," Sam said in disbelief, "Some good-for-nothing scoundrels gone and taken them!"
"Did I here someone mention me?" Meriadoc Brandybuck said emerging from behind a tree with Pippin in tow, both of them grinning mischievously.
Frodo laughed and the shocked and scandalized expression on Sam's face.
"We've got the strawberries here you silly hobbit!" Merry said.
"Grabbed 'em for safe keeping, as we know how much you love the first strawberries, Sam" Pippin added.
"You little scoundrels!" Sam exclaimed, "Having me all worried they'd been taken an' all, you don't deserve any!"
"If we hadn't taken them someone else would have Sam, and you wouldn't have got them back then" Merry said.
"Well seeing these strawberries have caused us so much trouble, let's say we sit down and eat them then shall we?" Frodo suggested with a smile.
The hobbits settled themselves on the grass and shared the strawberries between them.
They were the sweetest strawberries the Shire had had in a long time.
