Doing what he had to do
Sakazuki had always been too fanatical, too cruel. He couldn´t be allowed to become fleet admiral.
I had to fight his challenge.
That was what Aokiji was thinking when he went into the fight with Akainu.

Kuzan had always been too soft, too relenting. He couldn´t be allowed to become fleet admiral.
I had to challenge him.
That was what Akainu was thinking when he went into the fight with Aokiji.

The two admirals were fighting each other on a remote island of the grand line.
A few weeks ago, right after the war, fleet admiral Sengoku had announced that he was stepping down and named admiral Aokiji his chosen successor.
But Akainu came for and requested the position from the world government for himself.
None of the two admirals was willing to accept the other.
Akainu was a fanatic, a zealous killer. With him in charge nobody would be safe anymore. So thought Aokiji. He did what he had to do.
Aokiji was a weak-hearted fool. With him in charge the criminals would overrun the world government. So thought Akainu. He did what he had to do.
And so they were fighting.
It was magma against ice.
Both of the admirals were logia users, both were extremely good in controlling their haki, both were evenly matched, nearly.
Both of them received horrible wounds, were exhausted and weakened.
The fight continued for ten days. The island was devastated in the process, burnt down and frozen at the same time.
Finally it was Aokiji who was lying beaten on the ground.
Akainu was standing above him.
He thought about finishing his opponent off. His aims, he knew, justified everything.
Kuzan, now Aokiji, would never be loyal to him, he was aware of that.
He remembered over twenty years ago, on Ohara, when the when vice admiral Kuzan let one of the inhabitants, a criminal, go, a eight year old girl.
No, this man would never follow his ideas, he would always somehow try to blockade him. He did so for years.
It was better to remove him now or he could become a constant threat to his aims of absolute justice. Ultimately the ends justify everything.

Aokiji knew it was over for him. He remembered over twenty years ago, on Ohara, when the when vice admiral Sakazuki shot a escape ship full of hundreds of refugees.
This man knew no mercy. All he could do was face his fate now.

Akainu didn´t knew himself what caused him to save Aokiji instead of letting him die.
In the end, he was a colleague, had been one for decades. They were never friend and would never be.
But still something drove him to carry the wounded admiral back to the next marine base.
Aokiji may have been weak-minded and misguided but, he was still one of the marines. Akainu just couldn´t justify to himself to just let him die.
He was not a criminal after all. Even if his actions certainly did a lot to help them.
Well, that would end from now on, Akainu thought.
With him in charge many things would change in the world. Relency for criminals no matter what sort of had no longer any place under the marines.
He would do what he had to do.
