A/N: A small oneshot idea that came to me. Please enjoy.
Title: The Girl Next Door
Rating: K
Genre: Friendship
Pairing: Naruto x Hinata
Naruto looked out of his apartment window. All was quiet, as expected, for the Third Hokage specifically chose this quiet section of town for the seven year old orphan to grow up. The neighbors were tolerant of the young boy's antics and mainly kept to themselves, the school was close by, and there was a park that had swings. Boy, did Naruto love swings. Everyday after school, he would stop by and just swing, dreaming of going to the moon with a best friend in tow. But that was the problem. Nobody wanted to be Naruto's friend.
And this affected Naruto badly. He wanted a friend.
He looked down at the street and saw a moving van park in the drive of the two-story house across the way. A little girl, around Naruto's age by the looks of it, ran out of the van and into the house. Naruto's face brightened. This was the first new kid to move into the neighborhood. Perhaps she could become friends with him.
"No," the man said when Naruto asked for the little girl to come out and play. The boy looked down in sadness and the man slammed the door in poor Naruto's face. In time, the boy would learn that this new family was none other than the Hyuugas. They were an upper crust family that fell from grace when accused of overstepping the treaty between Konoha and the Lightning. Upon hearing this, Naruto vowed he would somehow befriend that little girl.
One afternoon, Naruto was practicing his penmanship when he saw Hinata in the second story window across the street. He waved.
Surprisingly, she waved back.
Spurred on by the outcome of such a simple gesture, Naruto quickly wrote out a message on a pad of paper.
I'm Naruto, the sign read. The little girl across the street disappeared for a moment before reappearing with a reply sign.
I'm Hinata.
Want to play? Naruto asked.
I can't. Not allowed.
Why not?
I have to study.
Oh… :( Naruto wrote. Nice to meet you though!
Same here. Hinata replied. She looked into her house and left the window.
It continued on like this for a few months. The two would sit at their respective windows and write. They even bought binoculars to see each others signs more easily. Naruto hoped he could eventually get to talk to the little girl, but before he had a chance, Hinata moved away.
Many years passed, but Naruto was sure to remember the shy, blue-haired firl from across the street. It wasn't until college that he saw her again. She had grown to be absolutely beautiful. Her hair grew out and her face matured. She was even laughing with her friends. For the first time in all the years he knew her, Naruto heard Hinata laugh.
Now, since it had been years, Naruto did not know if she would remember him, so he waited and followed her to her dorm. He prowled the building's perimeter until he saw her in a third story window.
He gathered a handful of gravel and tossed the pebbles up. The rocks knocked against the window—tink, tink, tink. On the fourth tink, Hinata opened her window and finally looked out and down.
There, holding up a sign and smiling madly was Naruto.
Hi. My name's Naruto. Remember me?
A/N: As always, I ask that you review. Thank you.
