This was it. After months of searching, Hermione had finally found what had eluded her from the moment Harry had told her about it, and it was concealed in one of the only places students and teachers of Hogwarts alike could successfully hide secrets within the castle walls: the Room of Requirement.

She knew it was stupid – dangerous even – but she had to know. She needed to know. Was it Ron and she? In love perhaps? That was the one thing she could think of as she stood in front of the dangerous mirror that had shown one of her dearest friends his dead parents and almost gotten him killed in the process.

The Mirror of Erised.

Hermione had heard that she would waste her time, but she had to know. After all, she was Hermione Granger, the brightest witch of her age and Harry and Ron's voice of reason, and she always needed answers. And unlike the other questions she had asked through the years at Hogwarts, this was just one that could be fulfilled so easily by simply stepping in front of a mirror.

Hermione took a deep breath and stepped in front.

The first thing she saw was she and Ron, hand in hand. The joy and love on Hermione's face was clear enough that nobody could mistake it. It only made her heart leap as she saw Ron looking at her with the same affection, if not more. Harry was standing nearby, smiling a smile that was rare enough that Hermione had only seen once, when he had kissed Ginny at the Gryffindor party. He was carefree and happy, the weight of the world lifted from his shoulders. He wasn't the Boy-Who-Lived or the Chosen One. He was just Harry, something Hermione knew to be one of his wishes. The rest of the Weasley family stood around her and Ron, all happy and waving frantically. Her parents were there as well, glowing with adoration and love as they watched their daughter. She saw Neville, Luna...

There was no Voldemort, no war to cause the death and pain she had grown used to but never stopped dreading. Her family was alive and happier than she had ever known possible. It was - truly - her heart's deepest desire.

Hermione smiled sadly at the Mirror, wishing more than ever that this future she saw was true, but knowing that it was impossible for all of them to escape the war unscathed without mental or physical scars.

A single tear fell down her cheek.

I hope you all enjoyed this little one-shot! I know that it's not much, but I was inspired when I read about an interview with J.K. Rowling and her thoughts about what Hermione would see. Let me know what you all think!
