Flowers

Spring

What should you give to the girl who wants nothing? She accepts gifts but I get the feeling that the gifts I give her are not appreciated as much as other people in this town would appreciate them. She politely murmurs an emotionless thank you when I give her my first tomatoes of the season. Maybe she doesn't like tomatoes.

When I was at the spring to catch some fish, I discovered a bright yellow flower which grew all around the spring. I asked Gustafa what type of flower it was and he said it was a toy flower. I quickly discover that most of the girls around here are delighted to receive flowers as gifts. Except one. Nami.

Summer

This season I decide to plant strawberries. Although the heat can be oppressive at times, I enjoy the sunny weather and the strawberries flourish. As I did with the tomatoes last season, I take the strawberries to many people around town so they can enjoy them. I also offer strawberries to the one girl who will not accept any flowers. The red fruits generate the same response as the tomatoes did.

Later in the season when I was near the spring again, I find that there are a different variety of flowers than in the springtime. These flowers are also yellow, and I gather them up again to give the flowers to people who enjoy them.

Near the end of the season I visit the Inn to ask for Ruby's advice on baking a pie. She mentions that she has made two pies with the strawberries I gave her.

"But the pies never stay around very long"

I ask why not.

"Well, that's because Nami eats most of them"

Seeing my startled face she adds:

"I didn't know she liked them either till I made the pies"

Fall

The leaves are very beautiful this season. Every tree has wonderful, unique combinations of gold, brown, and copper leaves. Instead of growing crops this season, I decide to hunt for mushrooms. I find a wide variety in many different parts of town. With these new varieties of mushrooms, I decide to try some cooking experiments. After several cooking disasters which even my dog refuses to eat, I finally find that mushrooms go very well with fish.

During one of my mushroom hunting expeditions, I come across a flower which is very different than the other ones I have seen so far. There are two blooms on this flower and each one has a different scent and a different color. As I study the flower, I am reminded of Nami. The two different flowers on the same stem make me think about how Nami might have two different personalities: one she shows the world and one which she keeps to herself.

I decide to offer these new flowers to Nami. When I once again present the flowers to her, this time I tell her that the flowers reminded me of her because they are unique and intriguing at the same time. This time she slowly takes the flowers from me and rewards me with a careful, wide smile.
