Apathy

A Council's Apathy

Disclaimer: I own nothing. As much as I'd love to, it belongs to Bioware, and the almighty George Lucas.

I had always looked up to the Council. To me, they had always seemed to have the answers; always seemed to be right. They had always seemed like wise, powerful leaders. Infallible.

Then the Mandalorians came. I had always believed the Jedi were there to defend the innocents, guard the peace and protect the Republic. I guess I was wrong. The Jedi did nothing. The Council said that we had to be patient. That there was something else out there, something dark. The Jedi were not to go to war. The Council's plan was to wait and see what happened.

Revan's plan was to fight the Mandalorians and defend the innocents the Council had condemned to death.

Obviously, the two plans conflicted.

I paced back and forth in the Council's antechamber. Revan was inside now, pressing our case before the Council for the fifth and last time. If they did not agree to join the Republic against the Mandalorians, we would leave the order to do so ourselves. We intended to bring as many young Jedi Knights with us as we could. Many of them shared Revan's thoughts on the situation, notably Innarie Fryr, a human female consular I'd met on Coruscant. We would have no trouble recruiting Jedi- in fact, as I waited for Revan, I could sense several Knights nearby, eager for the results of Revan's final meeting.

Of course, I was eager as well.

A short while later, the doors to the presence chamber opened to reveal Revan. She stood tall and proud, eyes shining with determination. The doors shut behind her as she steeped up to me. I lowered my gaze to meet hers.

"Will you stand by me, Alek?" Her face was neutral.

"You know I will follow wherever you lead," I replied. Then, in a soft voice meant only for her, I added, "You do not need to ask."

A small smile softened her features, and a familiar light brightened her eyes. "Don't follow too closely. I have been known to make sudden stops and sharp turns."

That made me chuckle. "I'll keep that in mind."

Her eyes shone. "Good." She said, before wrapping her arms around my neck. Reaching up, she brushed her lips against mine. My arms automatically snaked around her, enveloping her much smaller figure. Her lips were soft, and the kiss was over much too quickly for my liking.

"Come," she said quietly. "We have delayed too long already. Time is of the essence, and there is much to be done. The Mandalorians must be stopped."

I nodded. "There are many who seek to join us."

"Yes," Rev responded. She sighed softly. "I fear that the Council's apathy has caused a lot of damage. We have a long road ahead of us. The one against the Council was the first of many battles."

A/N: I've been toying with the idea of a Pre KOTOR I fic, starting with Revan and Malak leaving the order and following their exploits right up to Malak's betrayal during the Jedi Civil War. I'd be using a lot of creative license, mixed in with some canon events. This was a prelude of sorts I had written. Please read and review, let me know if there are people who would be interested.
