He should have known.
Like father, like son. He should have known what lengths his brother would have gone to. He should have known that he would be like a dog with a bone, gnawing it till his teeth bled. He had demonstrated it before, many times.
The fight had always been the same fight, but the two of them had always fought it so differently. But even then, he should have known that this would be the next step. Should have known what sacrifice his brother would be willing to make and what it would cost.
He should have known.
One year.
Full of possibilities and disappointments. Regrets and goodbyes. Wants and wishes that could never be granted.
He would have given anything.
And he had.
After all, their only weakness was each other.
But the day Sam reached into the darkness inside him to save his brother.
That day.
Dean realised exactly what he had done.
