Right on Time
Kurt has his epiphany on a Saturday.
He's rather proud of himself actually, managing to get all three kids in the car in under half an hour. Lily and Rosie are chattering non-stop and taking turns hanging onto his free hand while Dahlia dozes in his other arm, still recovering from her midday nap.
It takes another half hour to get then through the zoo; there are so many distractions which remain distracting despite the fact that they've visited a billion times. Lily wants to see the capuchins again and Rosie's deep, abiding love of the sea-lions in spite of their faintly fishy smell is becoming legendary. Kurt is so glad he kept them an hour ahead for this trip.
They manage to wade through the weekend crowds of visitors without too much drama and get to the staff office block with time to spare.
It's while they're heading up to the second floor of the building that a few crucial keywords occur to him and coalesce into a memory.
City. Office. Son. Ball game.
Handsome partner, his mind finishes.
Well, some things are different, he reflects, smiling to himself and looking down at the girls, who are working themselves into fine lather at the thought of seeing Dave, despite having seen him this morning at breakfast.
His smile gets bigger when the girls hit the top of the stairs and charge the open office door marked 'Dr. David Karofsky, Head Veterinarian'. They end up climbing Dave like he's a tree and forcing him, laughing, back into his desk-chair.
Kurt stays in the doorway with Dahlia for a little longer, watching Dave with their two eldest daughters. He's managed to get one on either knee and is listening to them chatter a mile a minute with an expression of awe and barely concealed amusement.
He's so good with them, Kurt thinks, his insides going soft and warm, he's always been so good with them.
Dahlia chooses this moment to wake up properly and coos, "Dada," at Dave. Dave grins back at them, his whole face lifting in that way that Kurt just loves. His heart still trips a little when he sees that grin.
Dave gathers Lily and Rosie in his arms and climbs to his feet. When he murmurs 'hey', and leans in for a hello kiss, Kurt curls his fingers under his collar to keep him close and murmurs back, "I'm so happy right now."
Dave stills and pulls back enough to meet his eyes. His smile is small and private now, and Kurt can almost see the memory there in his face, just behind his hazel eyes.
City. Office. Daughters. Ball game.
Handsome partner.
It was supposed to be ten years, but managing it in eight isn't too bad.
Dave kisses him again.
"Me too," he says.
