It wasn't really her eyes that had first caught his attention, way back in first year. It wasn't her hair either, like that rumor Clarice Vaine had spread around last term. No, it had been her brace, of all things, the dull sparkle of metal on teeth, that had caught his attention.

"What's that on your teeth?" The redhead looked up from her spot, next to the greasy-haired boy with the long nose.

"What?"

"That stuff. What's that metal doing on your teeth?"

Her brow furrowed as she answered slowly, "They're braces." Greasy-Nose-Boy rolled his eyes.

"But, uh, what are braces?" Now the girl turned away, clearly thinking he was making fun of her.

Shrugging, not really caring enough to ask any more questions, he shouted at her back, "Oh, hey! And I'm James Potter!"

He had a sneaking suspicion that from that day on, Lily had loathed the name James Potter.
