Sam stands before a funeral pyre, his tear-filled, haunted eyes glistening in the flickering ebb and flow of the flames. The fire slowly consumes the last remnant of his family he had...Dean... His heart catches in his chest...his eyes snap shut as the terrible pain of loss washes over him in a fresh wave. A quiet sob breaks from him...he feels like he is going to collapse…A strong hand catches him, braces him...He opens his liquidly gleaming eyes to look at the man beside him. Bobby looked back, tears in his eyes for the man he had always considered a son, disappearing now in the licking flames of the fire...He steadies Sam on his feet...a paternal wave of concern for the young man washing over him...

"It had to be done, son....it's what Dean would have wanted....at least his soul will be at rest...." his normally gruff voice gentle as he speaks to Sam.

"I had saved him Bobby....I had gotten him out of his deal....he was supposed to live......" Sam's voice broke off, his chest heaving terribly...

"You were supposed to live!!!!!!!" Sam screams into the night....he collapses to his knees, his body quaking with racking sobs....

Bobby sank to his knees, clutching Sam close to him...."I'm here son..." he said quietly...

"He was supposed to live Bobby....he was supposed to live....his deal was gone....Lilith was dead....I didn't even get to say good bye....." Sam said, his shaking voice breaking. He turned his eyes to the pyre.....

"Why Bobby....why did I survive the crash...not a scratch on me and he just slipped away....The ambulance didn't even get there in time.....When I came to, he was gone..." Sam's voice died off, his body shaking uncontrollably....

Bobby's heart was heavy...he loved these boys like they were his own....When they had broke the ties of the deal, he had hoped against hope that it was all over...that the boys would be able to rest at long last...They hadn't even made it 2 miles from the house where they had conquered Lilith. He had been following them in his own car. They had all been on their way to celebrate their victory, when all of a sudden, Dean's Impala served out of control in front of him. It tumbled end over end, coming to rest in a smoldering, broken heap hundred's of feet down the road. The cause of the swerve stood stone still in the middle of the road....Bobby barely stopped his car in time...The silvery fur of the wolf shone luminescent in the moonlight. It's large eyes never left Bobby's...For nearly a minute after he'd skidded to a halt, the wolf and Bobby stared wonderingly into each other's eyes. Finally, the wolf turned and padded of in the dark forest that prowled the side of the dark back road they were on...Bobby was too stunned to do anything for a long moment, but then his eyes took in the sight of the mangled Impala. He leapt from his car, pelting down the distance to the wrecked, smoking mess...When he arrived, it was Dean he saw first. He tried to find a pulse....nothing....no rise and fall of his chest....he went to Sam, Sam stirred...confusion filling him for a moment...then the clarity of what had happened returned...He turned to Dean...he tried everything to bring him back, but his brother was already gone....

Bobby didn't have the heart to remind Sam that if it's time for you to go, then go you must....Death does not take no for an answer, for all must settle up before its unyielding power in the end.....
