Hey! So I was really bored, and I always wondered what must have been going through Snape's mind when he saw Harry for the first time. I love Snape, and I'm sad that he lived a cold and loveless life, but I love James and Lily together too.
Disclaimer: Unfortunately, I don't own Harry Potter or anything cool or important. JKR just lets me play with her characters when I'm bored.
Severus Snape had always tried to block James Potter from his mind. The years he knew Potter were the worst years of his life. He tried to pretend that Lily Evans had never married the man he had always hated. He was pretty good at it. Most days, he could pretend like James Potter never existed, and Lily Evans was still alive, and that he didn't cause their death, and Lily loved him. But none of it was true, and he knew it wouldn't be able to keep living this lie forever. He would have to face the truth some day.
September 1st, 1991 was that day. He first saw it out of the corner of his eye. Amongst the group of frightened first years was a face he knew so well. It was the exact face of the man he hated most in life, on the day he had first met him. Snape watched the boy. It was almost definitely James's son. Which meant that he must be Lily's son, too. His suspicions were confirmed a few minutes later when Minerva called the name Harry Potter.
The scrawny first year climbed up to the stool and sat down. He had a lightening bolt scar on his forehead, and jet-black hair that stood up in the back. Just like James's.
"GRYFFINDOR!!" The hat yelled, and Harry stood up with a gigantic smile plastered on his face. It looked like James's smile too. Snape got a quick flashback of the day that James was sorted. He stood up and smiled, just like Harry had. Then he ran over to the Gryffindor table and sat down next to Lily. James leaned over and Snape saw James mouth the words "Will you go out with me?" to her. At that moment he knew that James was going to be his enemy for Lily's affections.
Back in the present, he felt a seething hatred for the boy come into his body. As far as Snape was concerned, this boy was James. And Snape would get revenge for everything Potter did to him while they were in school through his son.
Then Harry reached up and touched his scar. His lightning bolt scar that made him so famous. Harry looked over to Snape, and Snape saw Harry's eyes for the first time. They were the eyes that would torment him for the next seven years.
Those eyes that he saw were Lily's eyes. They were the eyes he had stared at so longingly for years. They were the exact same size, the exact same shape, and the exact same color as Lily's eyes. When he looked into the eyes, he remembered the love for Lily in his heart, and how he had ruined it by getting involved with the Death Eaters. He remembered how he had waited to tell Lily his feelings, and how it was too late, and she had already fell in love with James, when he decided to tell her his feelings. He remembered how he had ruined his chances by calling her a mudblood. Then he remembered that he had caused her death, and the death of an innocent man, even if he was his enemy.
Everything Snape had tried to avoid for so many years came running back to him, right when this one boy entered the room. He didn't know if he could take it. Seeing the boy with his enemy's body, and his one true love's eyes. He didn't know if he could take it. Seeing the boy with the green eyes.
So what did you think? Push that little purple-blue button over there and tell me. Peace, love, and chocolate!!
