Shadow sat at the kitchen counter on a barstool chair. It was Valentine's Day. Sonic was away visiting family, leaving Shadow to feel forgotten.
Shadow sat at the counter, staring at the blue sky outside.
Blue..Sonic is blue..
Shadow shook the thought out of his head. "He won't be back for three days, stop torturing yourself." His mind repeated this over and over.
He sighed, standing up and walking over to the couch, he sat down. Shadow looked at the pictures of Sonic and himself on the mantle. He sighed once more.
Later that day, when the dusk sky was streaked with purple, orange, and pink..
No blue. That's right no blue.
Shadow sat in the windowsill, the top half of the window open. He looked down at the couples walking in the streets below. He missed Sonic way too much. He envied the happy couples, holding hands, walking into fancy restaurants together, having a great evening.
Damn you happy people.
The phone rang suddenly.
Shadow stood and slowly walked to the small table, putting the phone to his ear.
"Hello?" Shadow said flatly.
"You're a winn-"
Shadow slammed the phone down into the receiver.
"Damn telemarketers.." He muttered, resuming his place on the windowsill.
Even later Shadow was laying on the couch watching a weird, crappy, Valentine's Day themed horror movie. Horror movies for horror fanatics who have no dates.
Horror movies are their Valentine.
Shadow realized he was one of those people.
Before Shadow knew it, he had fallen asleep.
The apartment door opened.
The blue blur slipped in the door, he saw Shadow, fast asleep on the couch. He smiled, walking into the bedroom and setting his bag on the bed, slipping something behind his back, and walking back into the living room.
Shadow was still asleep. Sonic crept closer to the sleeping hedgehog. He looked so peaceful and adorable. It was a change from his normal self. No matter now distraught and aggressive Shadow got, Sonic always saw past it. Shadow was different on the inside.
Sonic was trying his hardest not to awe at Shadow. Sonic slowly opened Shadow's hand, placing a small red velvet box in it. He closed Shadow's hand around it.
Shadow stirred, moving to lay on his left side instead of laying on his back. Sonic hit the floor as soon as he saw Shadow move even the slightest bit.
Shadow sighed softly in his sleep.
Sonic chuckled, peeking to see if Shadow had woken up. He hadn't.
Sonic leaned over and kissed Shadow.
"Sweet dreams, Shad." Sonic whispered, tip-toeing his way back to the bedroom and closing the door behind him quietly.
The next morning Sonic awoke early. He peeked around the corner to see if Shadow was awake yet. He wasn't. Sonic crept out into the living room. The room was dim, someone had closed the shades the night before so the bright sunlight wouldn't blind him when he woke up the next morning. Shadow.
Sonic kneeled next to the couch, and poked Shadow's nose. He hated that. A lot.
Shadow twitched, slapping Sonic's hand away. Sonic giggled, and did it again. Shadow stirred and twitched, his eyes opened slightly. Sonic blurred out of the room as Shadow began to awaken.
Shadow's eyes opened sleepily, immediately noticing the small box in his hand. He opened it. Inside was a small golden key necklace. A tiny piece of paper sat under the necklace, Shadow pulled both out and unfolded the tiny note.
It read: You're the key to my heart.
Shadow gave a faint smile.
Sonic stepped out of the hallway into the living room.
Shadow looked up, his smile got wider. He sat up quickly as Sonic came closer. Sonic saw excitement in Shadow's eyes. That's a twist.
"Do you like it?" Sonic asked.
"Yes.." Shadow replied.
Sonic sat down by Shadow's waist on the couch.
Shadow dove at him, pulling him into a tight embrace. Sonic lay there, he asked himself; "Why is Shadow so happy all of a sudden? He's never like this.."
Sonic tried to sit up, but Shadow had different intentions. Shadow shoved him back down and kissed him. Sonic kissed back.
After a short few seconds, Sonic managed to hold Shadow off long enough to say: "So you missed me a lot?"
Shadow nodded in reply, then chuckled, which he also never does.
Shadow kissed him harder.
"Bet you can't guess how much I've missed you." Shadow said quickly, in between two make out sessions.
"A thousand points?" Sonic guessed.
"Higher." Shadow muttered.
"A million points?"
"Higher."
"A trillion points?"
"Higher."
"Infinite amount of points?"
"Yes!" Shadow said enthusiastically.
Sonic smiled, "I've never seen you like this, why does me being home early make you so happy? Are you on something?" He joked.
Shadow stopped kissing Sonic and sat up, sitting on Sonic's legs, "I was seeing couples walk down the street, and I couldn't stop thinking about us. I guess I got jealous. And seeing you, I don't know what came over me.."
"Well what were you feeling when you saw me?" Sonic asked.
"Butterflies.."
"Anything else?"
"L-Love.." Shadow stammered, "I love you.."
Sonic stared back at Shadow.
"You've never said that before, Shad."
Shadow didn't respond.
Sonic sat up, placing both hands on Shadow's shoulders.
Then Shadow said something.
"I may never say it, but I don't talk much anyway, and what I say is what I mean. And I don't show many feelings, but I have them, just like everyone else. You do know that, don't you?"
Sonic stared at the black and red streaked hedgehog, unable to process anything.
After a while of silence Shadow finally spoke.
"Stay tuned blue boy, I might say something else meaningful."
Sonic rolled his eyes.
Shadow rubbed the side of his face on Sonic's.
"Happy Valentine's Day, my blue faker," Shadow grinned, looking out at the bright sky through the narrow slits between the panels.
The sky was blue.
The blue had returned.
