Chapter 1: Catch Me

Kanan was about to break down. He had just defeated the Inquisitor, but at what cost. Ezra died, he had fallen off the edge and died, and Kanan wasn't able to save him. He heard footsteps and turned around to see Ezra standing there.

"Ezra!" Kanan said full of happiness that he was alright. He ran over to him and with a pain of regret as he saw two scars on his cheek.

"Why didn't you catch me Kanan?" Ezra asked.

"What?" Kanan asked confused.

"I fell. Why didn't you catch me Kanan." Ezra said.

"What. Ezra I tried."Kanan said.

"Didn't you tell me once, do or do not there is no try." Ezra said. "And you didn't catch me."

"Ezra, please, I'm sorry. I did everything I could." Kanan pleaded as he started to cry.

"You said you would protect me Kanan." Ezra said.

"I tried to." Kanan said.

"You didn't catch me Kanan." Ezra stated again, "Why didn't you catch me?"

"Ezra, stop, please, I did my best." Kanan pleaded tears streaming down his cheeks.

"That's not good enough Kanan. I fell and you didn't catch me." Ezra said.

"No, please, no!"Kanan sobbed. "I did all I could! I promise I did!"

"Why didn't you catch me Kanan?" Ezra asked. "I fell, and now you will too." He pushed him off the edge and Kanan fell.

Ezra woke up in the middle of the night to an odd sensation. He felt again, and realized it was a wave emotion in the Force. It felt like pain. Someone on the ship was in pain and it, he felt it again, it was Kanan!

Kanan was hurt again! He had to go help! He ran out of his room and over to Kanan's room bursting through the door. The waves of emotion and pain in the Force grew stronger. Kanan was on his bed tossing and turning. Some items were floating around the room.

"Ezra, stop, please. I did my best!" Kanan said in a mixture of a moan and a sob.

Ezra walked over to his master's bed. "Kanan?" Ezra asked. It seemed like he was having a nightmare.

"No, please no!" Kanan screamed. Ezra was scared for his master now. "I did all I could! I promise I did!"

"Kanan!" Ezra said louder, grabbing his shoulder, trying to wake him up.

Kanan's eye burst open and he sat shot straight up and the objects fell to the ground.

Kanan was panting, trying to catch his breath. It was just a nightmare. He felt worry through the Force and looked over and saw Ezra standing next to his bed with a worried look.

"Are you okay Kanan?" Ezra asked.

Kana just had to make sure he was alright. He grabbed Ezra by the arm, pulling him forward into his arms and wrapped his arms around him, Ezra fell off balanced into Kanan's lap where Kanan uncharacteristically buried his face into Ezra's chest, taking in his steady Force signature calming down slightly.

"Kanan?" Ezra asked.

"You're okay?" Kanan asked through some chocked sobs.

"Yes, I came in here to check on you." Ezra said. He was slightly confused, Kanan was sobbing into his chest.

"I'm sorry Ezra. I'm so sorry." Kanan said taking his head away and pulled Ezra closer to him.

"Sorry for what Kanan?" Ezra asked confused.

"I let you down! I let you fall." Kanan said.

"What are—" Ezra started before realizing that Kanan was talking about on the star destroyer fighting the Inquisitor. "Kanan, I'm fine."

"Are you aren't angry at me?" Kanan asked.

"I promise." Ezra said.

Kanan looked down and Ezra's face looking for the sincerity, but was met with Ezra's scars. He gently put his hand on the scars.

"I-," Kanan started but couldn't finish.

"What these?" Ezra asked with a smile. "I'm fine Kanan. I kind of like them."

Kanan didn't reply.

"It was just a nightmare Kanan. It's over now." Ezra reassured.

Kanan still didn't release Ezra, he didn't want to be alone again. He was alone for far too long before he met Hera. He thought he lost Ezra, just like he lost his master, he didn't want to lose him.

"Shouldn't the both of us get back to sleep?" Ezra asked. Kanan slowly laid back with Ezra still in his arms. "Um, Kanan?"

"Please stay here. I need, I need to make sure you are alright." Kanan said.

"Alright." Ezra said. Ezra tried to get as comfortable as he could in Kanan's arms and managed to fall asleep. It took Kanan slightly longer than him to fall asleep, not wanting to fall back into the nightmare. But he fell asleep, and wasn't plagued by another nightmare for the rest of the night.
