Café encounter

Kanda was tired. He had been on the field for weeks, first simply travelling and then travelling while fighting random enemies. The number of akumas had been increasing lately, which naturally meant more work for the too few exorsists who were still alive and somewhat physically unharmed.

Now that he was sitting in a small, cosy café somewhere near Glasgow, he had finally time to think. As the slightly bitter smell of coffee filled his senses, he realized how much he truly appreciated the break from hiking, fighting and dealing with idiots - to put it simple, from everything that had come to be his life in the past few years. He hadn't been able to sleep or eat well lately, which had been affecting his mood, making it even worse than it usually was. But for some reason he now felt quite relaxed in the almost empty room. In addition to him, there were only two customers and a waitress in the narrow space of the café. The calmness, no matter how temporary it would turn out to be, was soothing.

However, with the attempt of unwinding came the thoughts. Overpowering, wicked thoughts that refused to leave him in peace. The what if's of the war appeared in his mind as clear as the morning sky after a long battle. The more he tried to ignore them, the more persistent they became. Frowning, Kanda began to wonder what kind of life he would be leading hadn't he joined the Order. It wasn't as if he didn't like his life, because he did, at least in some very twisted way, but the idea of having been the one making his own decisions, being the one in charge of his own life became more and more appealing as the days passed and the number of scars - both physical and mental - augmented.

His mind reverted back to the present moment only after he registered how cool his coffee had already become. Grimacing he put the cup down. The other customers had left at some point, and Kanda was now faced with the notion that it was apparently closing time. The waitress didn't seem to mind him being there though, so he felt no need to leave right away. Especially because the person he was waiting for hadn't arrived yet, even though the clock proved them to be more than an hour late. Kanda frowned. He didn't want to think he had been put upon, but once again the emerging feelings were outweighing all rational thought.

Just when he was thinking how the world really wasn't kind to little things, the door of the café opened, and Allen entered the silent business premise. He looked worn out, but his eyes were as full of hope and understanding as they always were. When Allen's gaze met Kanda's, words weren't necessary, as the simple look held all the comfort and assurance the older boy had needed mere seconds before. "You're not doing this alone."
