"So this is like a kinda outter-space service station, yeah?" Amy looked around. There was an island in the distance with rockets and spaceships parked on it and people were taking boats to the island they were on. The streets were lined with hotels, restaurants and shops. Little shops, the type the Doctor liked.
"Exactly," the Doctor said. He pointed to a plain-looking restaurant saying, "let's go there, I hear they serve fish custard. Actually it's fish trifle but it's almost the same!"
"They do have normal food don't they? Remember what happened last time with the cheese flavoured jelly?" Rory asked remembering previous mishaps with alien food.
"If you want fish you can take it out of the trifle and if you want trifle don't eat the fish!" The Doctor told Rory as though he was a picky child. "And if you want jelly you can just eat the bottom of the trifle. That's what I love about trifle!" The Doctor was looking positively gleeful while his companions were becoming more and more exasperated. "Besides you could always have the crisp sandwiches or the goulash cheesecake."
"Salmon!" The Doctor exclaimed. "They could have put any type of fish in this and it's salmon!"
"But is it actual salmon or some weird alien salmon?" Amy said with a mouthful of chicken flavoured ice cream. The Doctor looked at her and then at his watch.
"Oh! It's 2010 – two hundred years before any other type of fish is introduced into this part of the galaxy. Why do I always get it wrong?"
"Because you're stupid!" The Doctor recognised the voice that said this.
"Jack! What are you doing here? Don't you have your vortex manipulator?"
"I could ask the same thing."
"I came for fish custard."
"I though the banana tea was more your cup of...never mind. Your new companions are hot."
"What do you mean 'new companions?'" asked Amy.
Jack changed the subject, "do you get younger every time you..?"
"No, why..." The Doctor looked puzzled. "Oh! You haven't seen me since I... What do you think?"
"Not bad at all! The tweed and the bow tie remind me of this one time-"
"I still haven't introduced you to Amy and Rory!" the Doctor shouted, causing the group to receive a few alarmed looks. "Amy, Rory, this is Jack. Jack this is Amy and Rory Pond."
"Actually it's -" Rory was cut off.
"No flirting with them! They're married!"
"Why...?" Amy asked, trailing off.
"He wants me all to himself!" Jack winked.
"Shall we head back to the TARDIS?" the Doctor asked. "For a cup of... proper tea and a chat," he added when Jack raised his eyebrows.
As they walked back to the TARDIS Amy hung back and spoke to Jack. "When you said 'new companions' it sounded like we're just a couple more in a long line. Like we're replacements."
"He nine hundred years old," Jack explained, "he couldn't have been able to spend that long alone." They walked in companionable silence for a few minutes.
"How well do you know him?" asked Amy watching Jack to see his expression – he didn't seem very surprised by the question.
"From my perspective, I've known him a long time but I know as much about him as anyone does... though I can understand him better than anyone."
"Whys that then?" Jack didn't answer Amy's question.
"So, how did you meet the Doctor?" Amy asked when they were in the TARDIS drinking tea and munching on biscuits. She was always curious about the Doctor especially when it came to mysterious people he knew.
Amy continued with questions like this including, "Are you like the Doctor's husband?" which was when Rory suggest they leave the Doctor to catch up.
"How's Alonso?"
"Fine. Thanks for introducing me to him, by the way."
"What were you doing on the service station planet? Not conning anyone, I hope."
"It reminds me of Earth. After so many months away from it I missed Earth but I'm not ready to go back."
"Would it help if you travelled with us for a while? We're heading for an ABBA tribute planet next."
Jack grinned.
