A/N: This fic is for the Going, Going, Gone! Challenge for the prompt word: monumental, It's 405 words. There is a modern diamond mine in called Jubilee in Russia. I took the name as I thought wizards may have mined there before Muggles.
The task before her was monumental and Hermione hoped that she would be able to accomplish it in time.
The Order had been given information that Voldemort was looking for an object which could increase his and his followers powers increased dramatically after completing a gruelling ritual. There had been no name for the object, and because of that many doubted it even existed.
Hermione, however, had remembered a reference to something called the Jubilee Diamond in an obscure book. The properties of the objects were extremely similar and Hermione hoped that this is what Voldemort was looking for.
Almost a week later, Hermione thought she had made significant progress enough to call an Order meeting.
"What can you tell us, Hermione?"
"The Jubilee Diamond was mined in Moscovia, now Russia, back in 1577. It was originally bought by the Petrov family, but several generations later it was given to another one; the Romanovs. As the diamond was quite big it became the centerpiece of an elaborate necklace which became part of the crown jewels. It went missing sometime between 1917 and 1925 when the Romanovs were imprisoned and executed, and when an inventory of the jewels were published. No one is quite sure where they went," Hermione informed them.
"You think you know though, don't you?" Bill asked.
"I checked when the Petrov's had visited Britain over the past thirty years, and decided to go through the old Daily Prophets at Hogwarts hoping that there would be a picture of them in it. I found Alexandra Petrov wearing an identical necklace in one from 1983. The only downside is that the Petrov's are close to Antonin Dolohov's family. It means Voldemort already has a head start."
"That's bad news indeed," someone at the back said.
Hermione nodded.
There was not much more she could now other than perhaps go to Russia and convince the family to go into hiding, but she knew that would never work. Hermione would leave the immense task of figuring out what to do, to those who knew how the Petrov's would react.
She hoped that they would be able to stop Voldemort from acquiring it as there was no way to tell just how powerful he would become once the ritual had been completed. The thought filled her stomach with dread at what would happen if they failed. Life and the world as they all knew it would disappear.
