Edgeworth shut the passenger door of his car slightly more forcefully than was strictly necessary and walked around the back of the vehicle to take his place behind the wheel. He had somehow been conned into giving his drunken rival, Wright, a lift home thanks to those pubescent harpies who were never far from the infuriating defence lawyer.
Wright was mercifully quiet on the drive through the city and Edgeworth admitted privately that disorganised as the man was, he was a decent person and a good lawyer. It was galling to lose to such a person, but they were both doing their jobs, even if Wright had the annoying habit of taking it personally.
Arriving at the block of flats he'd been told Wright lived in Edgeworth slung Wright's nearside arm around his shoulders. The movement roused Wright from the doze he'd fallen into and although he lacked the concentration to walk straight or open his own front door he was fully capable of babbling drunkenly. Edgeworth tuned out the most of it, recognising the evangelical note in the other's voice. His head jerked around at the words 'Von Karma' and Wright's eyes widened as his brain caught up to his mouth. He winced and big blue eyes apologised silently for his tactlessness.
The flat was messy, papers strewn haphazardly on the coffee table and spilling off the sofa onto the floor. Edgeworth revised his plan of dumping Wright on the sofa at that and sighed, instead heading through to where the bedroom would logically be in a place of that size. He shouldered the door open with the shoulder not currently draped in lawyer and let Wright slide off onto the bed.
Wright watched as Edgeworth removed his shoes and tie for him, then caught Edgeworth's sleeve as he turned to leave. 'Don't you ever get lonely, Miles?' Blue eyes stared trustingly up at Edgeworth, so full of sorrow and some mindless affection Edgeworth couldn't place due to Wright's drunken state, Edgeworth froze, confusion and sneaking fear fogging his mind. Wright took advantage of his friend's distraction and pulled him down to his level, pressing their lips together roughly.
Wright tasted of alcohol, and Edgeworth pulled himself free of the sloppy kiss at once. Instead he pushed Wright back, tugging a duvet over him. 'I'd quite like for us to remain on speaking terms come the morning.' he commented mildly, not offended by the advance but far more aware of the potential consequences than his earnest, drunk rival. 'Out of respect for the friendship we once had, I take my leave of you for the night, Mr Wright.'
Phoenix stared at the now-empty doorway for a long moment before consciousness faded.
