I knew it was a bad idea to go to the surface! I just knew it! But she never listens to me. Well, okay, sometimes she does, and sometimes I really am just a guppy, but I knew that something bad was going to happen when she went to the surface. And now, here she is, madly, deeply, devotedly, even crazy in love with a human! And not just any human. A human prince! She's a mermaid, he's a human. Unless she sprouts legs where her tail is supposed to be, she'll never be able to be with him. She even saved his life when he drowned, but that's my Ariel. She's heroic, and brave, and smart, and courageous, and pretty... and... pretty? Oh, this is so frustrating! She loves a human whom she can never be with, and she can't even see that I... well, I love her the way she loves him. She's not just my best friend, she's the mer-person I adore with all of my heart. I would stop my heart from beating sooner than see her hurting because of this human. And still, here I am, bringing her to her secret grotto where I spent the last twelve hours dragging that statue of her prince into the center of the room. It was heavy, and let's face it, I'm a small fish. I had a real hard time getting that thing in there. But, it's worth it when she scoops me into her arms and twirls around with me, happy that I could bring her the thing. And that's one thing I will never trade away for anything: Ariel's smile. Even if she is in love with a human.
