The sweet of sorrow

A sour taste with a hint of sweetness swept the man's mouth and he remembered.

~~~ Young Albus Dumbledor sat in the Hufflepuff common room it was the Christmas day. The day before his dearest's friend Christmas present came per owl. Albus long ago realised that Caitlin McCansey was more than just a friend to him and now he sat there and was worried about his love. Caitlin was muggle born so she was number one target on Grindelwald's 'who to kill' list. He, also, was worried for another reason. Albus decided to confess his love for Caitlin on Christmas day. So this morning he sent her an owl but there was no response, yet. --- The next day Albus sat in the Great Hall as the mail arrived. There was no letter for him, just the Daily Prophet. Albus looked at the front page: another attack. What really got his attention was a name mentioned. McCansey.
Albus read through the article, his heart clutching with every word he read. Then he stopped dead in his tracks. One sentence and all his hope was lost. The words echoed over and over in his head: nobody survived....nobody.....Caitlin, no.
Tears slid down Albus' cheeks, but that was nothing new these days. Around the great hall many people were crying and clutching either the Prophet or a black envelope.
Albus stood up, not even realising he did and walked to his dorm. He was crying so hard now that everything was blurred. So all he could see was a white dot sitting on his bed. He quickly wiped away the tears and could then see a battered white owl. It was Caitlin's.
Albus hurried over to her. 'Maybe Caitlin survived. Please let her be alive!' He was despaired.
Albus undid the letter. It was thick and somewhat heavy, but he didn't care.
Soon, Albus was crying again. Sobs of loss and grief were escaping the young adult's mouth.
Dear Albus, Of course I'll be your girlfriend! I liked you for a long time now and am so happy that you finally asked me out! Thank you for your wonderful Christmas present, I love it!
I hope you like mine, too! I know you love sweets so I have made some myself. They're called Lemon Drops. I made them with love, so every time when you are sad, you have to eat one and everything gets better!
I have to go now. Someone is at the door. Love Caitlin
Albus sank to his knees. A shaky hand reached out and took the metallic box that fell out of the envelope. He opened it and placed one of the sweets inside in his mouth.
''Thank you Caitlin. They're delicious.'' Albus whispered. He let out a shaky laugh which again turned into heartbreaking sobs.
That day Albus Dumbledor swore to himself that he would fight Grindelwald with his life. ~~
A tear slid down the old man's cheek and he placed another yellow sweet inside his mouth. They always soothed him, just like Caitlin said.
