"Broken people are meant to be fixed."

I remembered him saying those words to me as if it was yesterday. True to his word he had stayed by my side, slowly repairing me. He was, after all, a mechanic.

Bit by bit, I learned to trust once more; to love once more. Every moment I spent with him healed a small piece of my broken heart and my shattered soul.

I eventually gave him my heart and he gave me his in return.

He never admitted it but he was just as broken as I was. I had fixed him without meaning to and we had become reliant on each other. We needed one another.

Together, we began to build our lives up from the ashes of what had been; no longer dwelling on the past but looking towards the future instead. The house came first, the children later.

I remember feeling the pain leaving me. I remember learning to breathe again. I remember my heart being able to swell with happiness once more. I had learned to live again. Before him, I had only been surviving.

But now the children were gone and the house was empty and I sat on the porch alone. I remembered all that once was and all that could've been and my gnarled hands shook as I took hold of the railing to stand. I grabbed my walking stick and began to make my way down to the old cemetery out back; feeling the need to visit him once more, before I was laid to rest myself.

I reached the weathered gravestones with our children's names and I once again wondered why the gods had been so cruel as to let me out live all my family. I walked past them until I got to the one I wanted.

I smiled down at the old stone as I ran my hand over the words:

Here lies beloved father and husband, Leo Valdaz.

Love it? Hate it? PLEASE REVIEW! It would mean a lot! Sorry it's so short!

Thanks!
