Everyone underestimated him.
Sometimes he could hear them speak, hear them say that he would never amount to anything much if he kept to those video games. Mello and Near would always be better then him, if he didn't stop allowing himself be consumed in such hobbies.
He didn't care, though. Who ever said he wanted to be better? Matt knew that both Mello and Near had too much on their plate – they didn't need another competitor in the mix. Besides, he was content being the third-smartest in Whammy's House. He never liked the attention of being smart anyways, always leaving that to Mello.
Matt was far more content with his video games and silent company of his chocolate-loving room mate.
It wasn't that he couldn't out smart them, either. He was able to simultaneously listen to music, answer skill-testing questions, and yet still keep his characters alive during the final boss battles of most Final Fantasy games he played. He was able to do so much more than those around him, could focus on everything and nothing all at once.
If it wasn't for Mello, he would be brilliant. He would be better. If they weren't friends, if he didn't care so much about Mello's struggle to attain the title of number one, if he didn't mind having the attention brought on by the achievement, he would be number one.
There was no doubt about it; even Near had once mentioned it in a grim tone, once before.
Matt could have been L's successor.
If only he didn't care so much for his dear friend.
