Oz was definitely a unique child. He always remained calm no matter what the situation, and Gilbert thought that was very admirable. His master was intelligent, outgoing, cheerful, and mature beyond his years. Gilbert admired Oz so much that it hurt. Well, maybe that was a bit of a stretch, but—looking at the sleeping boy beside him, he couldn't help but wonder—why did it have to be Oz that suffered so much?—why couldn't it have been him?

Oz had called Gilbert into his room about 30 minutes earlier, shivering in a way that frightened Gilbert. It had reminded him of that day so long ago—and it could very well be a repeat of everything that had previously happened.

In Gilbert's mind, Oz was doing a fine job in coping with the situation; he had been ignored, neglected, by his own father for the second time. In all honesty, Gilbert wouldn't be shocked if the boy had broken down right when that had happened. He quickly dismissed the thought—no, that wasn't right. In this case, Gilbert would've been the one to have broken Oz.

When he thought back to it, he was the one who was so contained in anger that he'd abandoned his master. He'd chased after his father with murder on his mind, bloody murder. He wanted to kill that man who had caused his master so much pain…but, again, that would've broken his master down. Gil could not afford to let that happen, no matter what the cost would be.

Oz stirred in his sleep, causing Gilbert to turn his attention automatically to the boy. He wasn't sure how, but Oz had moved all the way from his place next to Gilbert to having his arms wrapped around Gilbert's left leg. Gilbert suppressed a chuckle, content in having made his master comfortable.

Yes, that was it. Gilbert was fine with whatever came his way, as long as he could continue to stay by his master's side. That was enough for him. No matter what happened, Gilbert would see to it that Oz and that Stupid Rabbit weren't thrown into the Abyss.

"Everything's alright, now, Oz."
