Chloe was pacing back and forth in the apartment she shared with Aubrey. She had said "I love you" to Beca. Beca just stiffened and said "thank you".
"What the hell is wrong with her?," Chloe said. "Who says "thank you" when someone says I love you to them? We've been together for almost a year. It's not too soon to say it. Unless she doesn't feel the same way." She stopped pacing. A worried look came across her face.
"Chloe, you know how Beca is," Aubrey said. "She loves you. Just because she doesn't say it doesn't mean she doesn't feel it."
"I don't know, Brey," Chloe said. "I'm not even sure she does love me. I feel like she just stays around because the sex is really good, or she just doesn't know how to break up with me."
"Come on, Chloe," Aubrey said. "You can't believe that's why she is still with you."
"I can't help it," Chloe said with tears in her eyes. "I really don't think she loves me. If she did, she should be able to say it."
Aubrey sighed. She paused, gathering her thoughts. "Beca may not say the words out loud, but everything she does screams that she loves you."
"Really?," Chloe said with skepticism
"Yes, really!," Aubrey said. "I can't believe you are actually making me defend the hobbit." She sighed and continued, "Who else knows what coffee to bring you depending on your mood? Who else goes clear across campus every morning to get you coffee from your favorite coffee shop? Who else would fly home only to immediately turn around and fly back to Barden because you were in the hospital with appendicitis? Who else brought you hot tea and honey to help soothe your throat when you found out you had nodes? Who else cancelled three DJ gigs to take care of you when you had the flu? Someone who loves you, who is in love with you, that's who."
Chloe sat there chewing on her bottom lip. "I don't know, Bree," she said. "She could of done all those things because she thinks of me as her friend."
"O-M-acaG, Chloe!," Aubrey screamed in frustration. "When did you become so dense? I have been your best friend since kindergarten, and I have never, NEVER, done any of those things for you. And to be honest, I love you, I really do, but I only know the coffee you order when we go to the coffee shop together, not different coffees for your different moods. I certainly wouldn't make the trip all the way across campus to get you coffee every single morning. If you were in the hospital I would call and make sure you were okay but I certainly would not turn around as soon as I got off the plane just to come back to check on you. I was more worried about how you were going to do your solos than I was about how sore your throat was. I have never cancelled a class or anything else when you are sick. I usually just leave medicine by your bed and go about my day."
Chloe looked at Aubrey as if seeing things clearly for the first time. "Oh my, God!," she said. "You're right. She does show me every single day in so many ways that she loves me. I'm such an idiot. I need to go find Beca."
Chloe got up and headed for the door. She looked at Aubrey and said, "Thank you."
Aubrey just nodded and waved her off. As Chloe headed out the door to find her girlfriend, she looked back at Aubrey. "By the way, the things you just said, proves that Beca really does love me. It also proves that you're a shitty best friend," she said with a wide grin.
