The Marauders walked off the stage among the cheers and hollering of the crowd. They had decided to compete in the Battle of Hogwarts, a local band competition, and had chosen one of their favourites, The Wolf Inside.
"That was wicked," Sirius said, slinging his guitar across his back before he threw his arms around James' and Remus' shoulders.
"No, it wasn't," Peter said, crossing his hands over his chest as he walked behind them. "No one even noticed me. They never notice me. The drums always block everything."
"That's not why no one notices you, Wormtail. It's because you're repulsive," Sirius said, ignoring Remus' scowl as he laughed at the blush creeping up Peter's face.
James grimaced as moved from under Sirius' arm and waved a hand across his nose. "Talk about repulsive. God, Padfoot. You reek! And did you have to take your shirt off again?"
Sirius winked as he rose his arms above his head, flexing his muscles and tensing his stomach. "The ladies love it, Prongs," he said.
"That's what you think," someone said.
The guys looked up to see three people standing before them, clad in dark colours and spiky accessories on their arms, legs and neck. There were two girls, one with long deep red hair and the other with short sand-coloured hair, and a boy with dark hair that hung around his face like a curtain.
"And who might you be?" Sirius asked with a scowl. He was never one to take criticism lightly.
"We're The Thorns," the red-haired girl said, "And we'll be the one who will win the Battle of Hogwarts."
"Do you hear that out there?" Sirius asked, sticking his thumb over his shoulder to the still shouting crowd. "You guys don't stand a chance."
The redhead stepped forward until she was right before Sirius, just a hair's breadth between them. "We'll see about that," she said, prodding him in the chest before she threw her head back and walked around him. Her two band-mates followed behind her, the other girl's nose in the hair while the boy continued to watch his feet.
Sirius scoffed as the Thorns began to set up on stage. "Can you believe her?" he asked. "Some spiky goth clothes and she thinks she owns the place."
He was about to say more, when there was a loud screech from the nearby speakers, causing them to scream as their hands flew to cover their ears.
"We're the Thorns!" the redhead cried out as the crowd cheered. "And we're going to play our song, Half-Blood Prince."
Sirius rolled his eyes and said, "Come on. Let's head to the lounge and get something to drink. I'm parched."
They were about to walk off when the most beautiful voice James had ever heard came from the speakers. He turned around to see the sullen boy had taken the microphone as his fingers moved carefully over the strings of his guitar. There was so much emotion and pain pouring out, James felt goosebumps travelling across his skin.
"Come on, Prongs," Sirius said, tugging on James' shoulder and pulling him away from the side of the stage.
James cast one more look behind him, watching as the boy threw his head back and the light shone directly in his beautiful dark eyes. He would find more about the mysterious boy with the broken heart.
