Title: Au Lieu du Mariage

Fandom: Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

Pairing: Franz/Albert

Rating: PG.

Word Count: 265

Summary/Description: On happiness. It comes in many ways. (Franz's heart swells for them. Bitterness has no place here.)

Warning/Spoilers: Episode 18, I guess.

A/N: Alright! This is my first foray into the Gankutsuou fandom, with an introspective piece (I do love doing introspection) about my favourite pairing. Err… tell me what you think? I'm trying to get a handle on personalities.

Disclaimer: I do not own Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo; neither the book nor the anime.

Franz smiles.

He does not have to pretend to be happy for Eugenie and Albert; theirs was a slow moving love, hindered by all those confusing bits of childhood and growing up. When they realise that they do truly love each other, it is evident in everything about the pair; how they laugh, how they smile, how they talk. It is has been a long time coming, and Franz's heart swells for them. Bitterness has no place here.

Franz fights.

He may not care much about fate or destiny or the merit of coincidences, but he heeds his gut feelings, and the Count will not be trusted. Franz will not simply watch Albert fall into this web of lies and deceit and power that none among the high aristocracy can sense; he will not. He will find out the truth, at all costs, because he knows salvation comes with it hand in hand. Albert is not happy with him right now, but before the end, he will be.

Franz dies.

And he does it without a second thought. It has been this way since they were children. Albert does something stupid; Franz sweeps away the mess, and puts the spotlight on himself. In a way, they are still children, and it is no different. He has no regrets, even now, looking at his friend's devastated face, tears flowing like they have no end. Franz knows Albert will be happy.

That is all he can give him. Happiness.

Franz dies happy.

A/N: Yeah.

Comments loved. :)
