whiskey lullaby

(theme forty-nine: alcohol)

We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time, but he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind, until the night...

Mumbling in his sleep,

screaming out her name,

he'd rather have died with her

than live with all his pain.

Nobody ever knew the truth

of why he drowned his soul:

it's because he truly misses her-

without her, he's not whole.

They hear him scream for Maysilee,

and how he's finally going to die,

but they thought it was just rambling,

not his suicide.

He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger, and finally drank away her memory,

He wished and wished and wished for her,

but it didn't give her breath,

so he finally decided

he'd be with her in his death.

And he scribbled on a paper,

"I'll love her till I die,"

then found the first bottle

and opened it with a sigh.

Midnight came so quickly,

but he stayed down on the floor

because through drinking, he just couldn't

move his body anymore.

Life is short but this time it was bigger than the strength he had to get up off his knees...

He forced himself to bed,

flopped down, next to his note,

and remembered that he meant

every word that he wrote.

So it took just one more bottle,

for it to take him down.

He slurred her name, fell over,

and never came around.

When midnight turned to dawn,

they saw the bottles by his side,

and it took one look to know

that he had finally died.

We found him with his face down in the pillow with a note that said "I'll love her till I die,"

They found where she was buried,

because they always knew

that wherever Maysilee was,

he'd want to be too.

A standing, peaceful willow

that made it through the war

was home to two dear friends-

who may have just been more.

And through the tears and sadness,

they could almost hear a song

singing him to rest-

and then Haymitch was gone.

And when we buried him beneath the willow, the angels sang a whiskey lullaby...

Wow. This is pretty intense... the title and lyrics in italics are from the song Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss. I thought it fit the theme. It's so weird that this is a poem, though... the song is so saaaaaaad! I'm glad about Haymitch and Maysilee, though. And by the way, the "they" who is repeatedly referenced represents Katniss and Peeta. So, yeah. Review!
