PROLOGUE
Bluefern stared at the sky. How long must it take, she thought. How long must it take to get an answer? Emotions fought to get out, but she knew that she must be strong, she must stay strong. As clouds covered the moonlit sky, tears pricked at the corner of her eyes.
How long?
CHAPTER ONE
"Jaykit, look out!"
Jaykit jumped, startled. She turned around to see a flash of grey and black before she was knocked over.
"Quailkit!" She complained, exasperated.
"What?" Her brother had a mischievous grin on his face. "I didn't do anything!"
"Yes you did, we all saw that!" Piperkit exclaimed, jumping up and down excitedly.
"Ok, fine, maybe I did." Quailkit said sheepishly.
As her littermates ran off, Jaykit went back to her day dream, trying this time to pick out the strange cat's entire conversation.
"Bluefern...Bluefern!"
"What's wrong with her?"
"Get the medicine cat!"
"What...help her...!"
"We...nothing..."
Jaykit sighed and opened her eyes as the sounds slowly faded away, leaving her just as confused as ever. Who even IS Bluefern? Why am I having these voices in my head? She was interrupted yet again by her mother.
"Jaykit, sweetie, what are you doing? Are you feeling well? Are you sick? Are you hurt?"
Well, that statement wasn't entirely true. Rainpool was her foster mother, as Jaykit's real mother had died after she was born.
"No Rainpool, I'm fine."
Jaykit looked up at her and saw relief in her gaze. This was an annoying thing about Rainpool. She never stopped worrying.
"Jaykit, Jaykit, come play with us! Lilykit and Bluebellkit found a moss ball!"
Jaykit looked once more at Rainpool, then raced away to where her siblings were standing. The two older kits, Lilykit and Bluebellkit were standing behind them. Unlike Jaykit, whose pelt was very fluffy, Lilykit's and Bluebellkit's pelts were sleek and shiny. That was usual, considering that those two were nearly 6 moons old.
Lilykit batted the moss ball to Jaykit, who jumped for it and batted it to Piperkit, who caught it with her teeth and started running. Quailkit started chasing after her, and the two started wrestling for it. After a few moments, Quailkit came away triumphantly holding the moss ball. Jaykit ran at him, but he dodged, dropped the moss ball, and batted it to Bluebellkit. Piperkit jumped onto Bluebellkit, and clung on for a few moments until she was shaken off. Jaykit ran over and tried to get the moss ball.
"Get it Jaykit!" Piperkit cheered.
"Wait for me!" Quailkit squealed and ran over.
Bluebellkit held the moss ball high above their heads. Jaykit and Quailkit jumped for it, but they were too slow everytime. Finally, Jaykit collapsed, panting heavily.
"All right, I give up." She gasped.
"Awww, ok." Lilykit sat down.
"Kits! Come here, it's time for your meal!" Rainpool called from the nursery.
"Ok, coming!" Jaykit, Piperkit, and Quailkit chorused.
"See you later!" Lilykit called after them as three kits scampered away.
As the three kits ran into the nursery, two she-cats watched them from StarClan. One was a silvery blue, with darker splotches, and the other was a calico, with black ears.
"They've grown up so fast." The calico murmured fondly, though her green eyes were sharp with grief.
"They must be told soon, time is running out." The other replied.
"I hope you're right, Bluefern. I just wish that they could have a normal life."
"Even we can't choose our own destinies." Bluefern laid her tail tip on the calico for a few moments, then turned and padded away.
When she was gone, the calico turned back to the kits.
"I love you, my children. Be brave. Stay strong." She whispered, and faded away.
So, that's the first bit of my story! Please review, and I will hopefully post a new chapter every week, if not more.
