AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is my first fic, so go easy on me! I hope you all like it and please review it and tell me what you think :)
It was a beautiful evening with nothing to do. Mary and Rhoda were both bored out of their minds, so they decided to go grab some dinner and catch a movie together.
"Hiya, Mair!" Rhoda exclaimed as she entered Mary's apartment ready to get their fun-filled evening started.
"Oh, hi, Rhoda. I'll be out in a minute!"
"Okay, take your time, Kid… I'll just sit out here and decide which movie sounds entertaining enough for me to sit through for two hours." Rhoda picked up the newspaper and flipped over a few pages, scrolled down a little bit and vuala: MOVIE LISTINGS. Taking her index finger and skimming the page, she came across one that sounded pretty interesting. "Hmmmm." Reading softly to herself. "A bookish CIA researcher finds all his co-workers dead, and must outwit those responsible until he figures out who he can really trust. That sounds interest- Oooohh! And it has Robert Redford in it, I'm in! And Faye Dunaway is his love interest… lucky bitch." Rhoda scoffed.
Mary faintly heard Rhoda's little remark and wasn't really surprised about it. It is RHODA, after all. "Why the profanity, Rho?" Mary asked her, as if she were surprised Rhoda had said something like that in the first place.
"I found this great movie with Robert Redford in it and Faye Dunaway is his 'mistress'. I would give both my legs and left arm to be in her position."
"Aha! Now I see. I think I'm right there with you." Mary said with a sly smile.
"Yeah, say kid, are you ready to go? I'm starved and we need to go eat… (looking down at the movie schedule) quick! The movie starts in an hour."
"Alright, alright… don't get your panties any more knotted than they already are."
"Let's go, Mary.. Or should I call you Miss Richards? You sound like the damn Queen of England."
"How do you figure that?" Mary asked crisply.
"You said panties, Mair. Back in the Bronx, if someone called their underwears 'panties', they'd be getting pushed up against the wall and beaten by One Eyed Jack for being a pansy."
"Well, I grew up in Roseburg, Minnesota, Rho. That's a little different. I was taught to act like a lady."
"Well then, Elizabeth..." Pushing Mary towards the door. "Your chariot awaits."
"Well, Rhoda I had a great night. This was one of the best dates I've had, I don't have to worry about you asking to come in-"
Rhoda cut her off. "And I don't have to worry about my not shaving above the knee!" They both snickered for a bit.
"Oh, Rhoda! I do love you, I hope you know that." Mary said empathetically.
"Yeah, I love you too, Kid." Then Rhoda's face fell ill, it looked like she'd seen a ghost. For as long as Mary has known Rhoda, she always knew when something was wrong. Okay, they've only know each other for three years, but Mary thought they had been the best damn three years of her life with this fantastic girl she gets to call her best friend.
Anyways, snapping back to reality, Mary's face developed this very worried look for her friend, the kind of look you get when someone's dog dies, or something of that matter. "Rhoda, are you okay?"
"I don't know, Mair. I just suddenly feel terrible, like someone is stabbing me in the stomach from the inside out."
"I'm sorry, is there anything I can do?" Mary asked worriedly.
"No, I think it was just all that popcorn I ate, on top of the huge dinner. I'll be fine, I just think I need to sleep it off."
"Well, okay… If you're sure."
"Yeah, yeah, Kid. I'm sure." Rhoda finally looked up and saw Mary's face. "Oh, Mair, really I'll be fine. Don't keep that expression on your face, too long. It might freeze like that." At least Rho got a smile out of Mary, she could always make her laugh, even in the worst condition. "Well, I'm gonna go get some rest, I'll see ya tomorrow, Kid. Maybe I'll drop by tomorrow morning before you go to work."
"Okay, Rhoda. I'd like that, get to feeling better."
As Rhoda walked up to her apartment, Mary couldn't help but to worry. She's never really seen her friend look that way before.
"I really hope she's okay." Mary muttered to herself. "Eh, it's Rhoda! She'll be fine! What am I worrying about? Ol' Mair, the big worry wart! She'll be fine, fine, fine. I hope anyways…" Mary got settled in to her sofa bed and finally drifted off to sleep after about an hour thinking of her friend.
It was almost time for Mary to leave for work, with no sign of Rhoda anywhere she finally decided to go up to check on her. Mary entered the door to her apartment and could never figure out why she kept it unlocked, at night. Rhoda always told Mary it was because if anyone was going to kill her, she'd rather it be at night when she's asleep so she wouldn't know it was coming. Mary always told Rhoda that was a foolish idea. Who would want to kill her?! She was always the life of the party and so much fun to be around, but Rhoda then told her it was because of how cold it is in Minneapolis. The skinny people that lived there would want to skin her for insulation. The two of them always had a good laugh about that one, but Mary never thought it was true. Rhoda was beautiful, she always had been. A little meat on your bones is good, I mean, Mary was only skin and bones and she was sometimes envious of Rhoda. But Rhoda always put herself down, every chance she got.
Mary walked up to Rhoda, who was still sleeping in her bed. She didn't look like she was comfortable though, she kind of had a look of torture or despair on her face. Then she saw her stirring and finally her eyes opened.
"Oh…" Rhoda whispered. "Hi, Mary. What are you doing here?"
"I just wanted to check on you, Rhoda. You said you would come see me this morning before work and you never came, so I figured something was the matter.
"Sorry, Mair. I must have been in a really deep sleep, but I do think something is wrong. I don't feel any better than I did last night."
"I'm sorry to hear that, what do you think is wrong with you?"
"I'm not sure, Kid. I can vaguely remember, but I think I woke up at about five this morning and was feeling really queasy… I guess if you look in that trash can, you can figure the rest out yourself. But my whole body aches, Mair. Maybe I'm coming down with something, I'm not sure. I haven't felt like this in a long time."
"Maybe you should go see a doctor today, I can take off work and go with you… if you want, of course." Mary said quietly, trying to tell her friend how much she cared for her.
"Would you really do that for me?" Rhoda asked, as if she didn't think Mary would put their friendship in front of her job. "You don't have to, but I'd like it if you would, I don't think I have the energy to go myself."
"Of course I will. I'll call the doctor and set up and appointment."
"Thanks, Mair."
Mary walked out of the room and called Rhoda's doctor, luckily for them, they could fit her in that day, very soon too, in about an hour.
They got to the doctor's office and only had to wait about ten minutes before they were called in. Mary didn't get up and walk to the door with Rhoda, she didn't think it was her place to be in the actual office with Rhoda and the doctor.
"Mary, what are you doing? Come on." Rhoda said vaguely, with just enough innocence in her voice to make it sound like she really needed her friend.
Mary loved being needed, so of course, she listened to Rhoda and followed them.
"You're pregnant." Doctor Adams said very nonchalantly.
Mary and Rhoda turned to look at each other, their eyes met for what seemed like an eternity. Then Rhoda finally spoke up, "I'm w-wh-what?"
"Pregnant." The doctor said without missing a beat.
