The Last Day
By: Kaitlyn Rose

Lucas carefully pulled his posters off the walls and then rolled them up, securing them with a
rubber band. Strange, very little in this house actually belonged to him, just the posters, and a couple of
souvenirs, and the rocks and pressed leaves form his camping trip with Dad. But just having that little bit
of stuff in here had made the room his. Now with that stuff gone, the room looked strange, cold.

Lucas was now all packed and ready to go. Tonight they were going back to seaQuest, and in two
days they were shipping out.

He should be excited. He should at the very least be happy, after all, seaQuest was his home,
where he did his research. He was anything but happy, however. Instead it felt like his heart was breaking.

There had been some rough times these past four months because of what Lawrence had done, but
honestly, living here with Mom and Dad had been wonderful. It had felt normal. He had loving parents, he
lived in a house on the beach, he had Darwin here, and they had dinner while sitting at a table almost
everyday.

He was going to miss living here big time. He was going to miss cooking with mom, playing SIM
games with Dad, hanging out with all his friends and playing on the beach. He was going to miss sunshine
and fresh air. The thought of leaving here almost made him feel sick, and he fought not to cry.

"It won't be as terrible as you think," Dad said to him, walking slowly into his room. Nathan
hadn't been trying to read Lucas, but the boy's sadness was so strong that Nathan couldn't help but pick it
up. "Once we're back on seaQuest we'll get used to living there again, too. We were all happy there before
and we will be again."

"I know," Lucas said. "It's just…I don't know."

"I understand," Nathan said. "Really, I do. I'm going to miss this place too. I'm going to miss us
being able to come and go as we please, and I know Kristin is also sad about going. She really enjoyed
being able to be a mom to you and taking care of you. Just remember, that this is only a house. The
important thing is that even on seaQuest we'll all still be together. The three of us, plus the crew, and
Darwin. We're still a family, we're just moving."

"I know, but it won't be the same. Once we go back we won't have as much time to spend
together, and Mom technically won't be living with us anymore. It'll just be…different."

"Actually, Kristin and I've talked about this. The wedding is in four months. We've decided that
at this point there really isn't anything inappropriate about having her move into the quarters now. After
living as a family for the past four months, we can't go back to living on different levels of seaQuest. So,
you don't have to worry about not seeing Mom that much. For that matter, you might actually get sick of
having us around constantly. Think about it, you work with Mom in the labs, and now she will be living
with us, and you also spend time on the bridge everyday with me."

"I guess you're right," Lucas said, finally smiling a little. "I know Mom's cooking stuff is all put
away, and I know she doesn't want to dirty the kitchen since we're leaving, but do you think we could get
carry out and have one last dinner here?"

"Sure. I think that would be a good idea. We can even invite the crew over, I just saw them, they
haven't had a chance to go back yet either."

"Cool," Lucas replied. The boy stepped over and hugged Nathan tightly. Nathan smiled as he
returned the embrace.
