A spine was supposed to make you strong, support your body.
As he looked at the crumbled bodies in the room, they no longer had a spine.
The evil that had possessed them had taken away there ability to function and because of that they paid the ultimate price.
However, as he looked at his younger brother, he refused to let him fall.
He had been Sammy's spine, comfort, and protection his entire life.
No matter what Sam had done today, standing in this God forsaken Cathedral, he would continue to hold Sam up, because well, that's what family does.
