-Jester-
I sighed. My hopes were fading, my heart slowly breaking. My hands strummed the chords of my lute, silently and slowly playing the same melancholy tune that fate was meant to play. I set my lute down and lean out the window watching Jane and Gunther walk hand in hand. I wish it were me. I thought. Life never seemed to satisfy me, no matter how hard I tried.
I continued watching, I do not know why, I kept watching the two sit and watch Gunther giver her a rose. Jealously panged me but I kept silent.
I watched with tired eyes, tears threatening to fall from my eyes. Jane, Jane, Jane my mind chanted over and over again with agony. pick me.
I closed my window and looked over to the table to the piece of parchment that King Caradoc had given me for Christmas last year. I gently pulled the ribbon away and pulled the parchment from its rolled up form.
To the Court Jester
You have never failed us, and have always made us smile and laugh, and for doing that, I reward you two months off, two months to do whatever you please. We will have a temporary Jester fill in while you are gone, and once you return your position will be returned to you.
Sincerely,
King Caradoc
"Maybe it is time for me to take this break" I mutter. I write a letter and place it on my bed. I take off my Jester outfit and change into peasants clothing. I take some money that was saved up and leave silently.
Jane won't notice, Jane won't care. As hard as it came to me, I accepted it slowly and painfully swallowed, I closed my door and noticed that Jane was sitting outside all alone with a rose in her hand.
My throat tightened, part of me wanted to tell her goodbye , part of me wanted to leave and never look back.
I decide to say goodbye, but in a way that I had not done before. I remember the still strong image in my head of Jane and Gunther dancing. I sketch it and write a few things, fold the parchment and I used a stone to hold the paper.
I run silently to Jane, and whisper. Then I turn back and leave into the night.
