If there was one thing John Winchester hated doing with his sons, it was shopping. Sammy who was almost four, would pull out all of the cookie boxes as they passed down the aisle, and Dean whose eight would want to push Sammy in the cart down a hill or just really fast.
But today, he really couldn't avoid leaving them home or rather at the motel. Instead he's pushing the cart, Dean at his side and Sammy firmly strapped into the seat.
"How about this?" John holds up a box of Cheerios.
"Sammy doesn't like those, he only eats Lucky Charms," Dean reaches further down on the cart and pulls out the box with the creepy Leprechaun on it and places it in the cart.
John sometimes wonders where he and Sam would be without Dean, Dean took Mary's place as being the person to remember what was needed on a grocery list. Sammy was starring around at the people at the mall, when a woman with a protruding stomach very heavily pregnant walks by.
"Fatty," Sammy giggles and points at her.
John looks a bit flabbergasted as he stares at his young son and the woman. But thankfully she doesn't take offense to it.
"You're silly," she tells him smiling and pinches his chubby little cheek, "and so adorable,"
Just as she is out of earshot, Sammy calls her a fatty again.
"No Sammy, she's not fat she's pregnant," Dean explains.
Sam looks completely stunned, pregnant isn't a word he's ever heard before, "pree-
"Pregnant," John helps him.
"What's that?"
As always Sam questioned everything, "it means she's going to have a baby,"
"Really?" asks Sam wide-eyed with this new piece of information, "the baby goes in there? Did the mommy eat it?"
John burst out laughing at his son's confusion, it was so funny. Sam didn't seem to notice at first.
"Is that what Mommy did to us? Did she eat us?" and at that Dean couldn't hold in his own laughter.
Pregnancy was more real to Dean, as having gone through it once. Mary and John had been as explanatory as they could about having a baby to a four-year-old. Sam on the other hand had never seen a baby none the less a pregnant mother.
"No Sammy," John shook his head, "Mommy did not eat you,"
"Oh," Sammy said his lips forming a perfect 'Oh', "then how does the mommy get the baby in her belly?"
John froze, it was a conversation he was hoping he wouldn't have to give for a long time. Dean stares up at him, curiosity in his own green eyes.
"Uh, Mommy and Daddy prayed for the baby," John says quickly remembering what his own parents told him when he was young.
"Oh, but I think it'd be cooler if the mommy eats the baby,"
John stared in disbelief at what was coming out of his child's mouth.
