She was so close to the edge that her tears fell all the way to the icy bottom. The water splashes up against, spraying against the rocks and Korra questions why in the world the universe made her the Avatar. Well, ex-avatar now. She wasn't anything now but a failure. She had allowed thousands of citizens to die and have their bending taken away right before her very eyes. She had failed them. Tears drip down her face. She makes no move to wipe them away.
"Why?" She screams into the wind. "Why did you pick me?" A choked sob escapes her. The hind howls in response, whipping the hood of her parka back and forth. In desperation, she rips her hair from their tassels and throws them into the water below. She doesn't need them anymore. She's not a water bender anymore. Why should she look like one?
"Are you happy, now? I failed. I failed everybody!" She howls against the wind, her voice ripping in two. And then she glances down below. Down at the jagged rocks and the frigid water. Wouldn't it be better if a new Avatar were to be born in her place? They would certainly do a better job. Hell, she didn't even deserve to be called the Avatar. Her mind flashes to her mom and dad. Then Tenzin and the airbender kids. And finally Mako.
'I love you,' he had said.
"I love you, too." She whispers underneath her breath. So quietly that the wind carries it away. "I love you, all."
And then her foot is stepping over the side and she's falling. Relief floods over her and she waits for the silence of death as her body connects with the ground. But it never comes. Instead Mako is there and he is grasping her arm so tightly that his fingernails are clawing blood in her skin. He pulls her into his arms and cradles her against his chest rocking her and crying.
"Why did you save me?" she whispers. "You should have let me die." A look of horror flashes across his face and he is burying himself in her neck.
"Korra," he sobs. "Don't you know that I can't live without you?"
"But Mako my bending."
"Hush. Everything will be alright."
"No, Mako. No it won't."
