Author's Note: Here is the beginning of my new Longmire series! Please read and let me know if you like it, next chapter should be up shortly!
Why did it have to be him? That was the question he asked himself repeatedly until he finally gave up, knowing an answer was nowhere in his brain to be found. Then a new question popped into his mind. What if I'm wrong? Now there is a question that can prove useful, and Sheriff Walt Longmire is certain it will.
Only two things would force him to make such a drastic decision. The only two people he had left; his daughter, who was fine, and his best friend, who was currently missing. This information was brought to his attention when he had gone to the Red Pony to apologize for his actions, something he would rarely do but knew this time it was needed. That was when he found that Henry wasn't there, and hadn't been seen since the night before when he had given a distressed young woman a ride home.
Walt's gut told him something bad had happened to Henry, and his brain told him it had something to do with Jacob Nighthorse. No, he wasn't blaming him like he had done in the past, this time it was different. Because this time, he had a feeling that if he didn't go talk to Jacob now, he would be next to vanish.
So that is what brought him here. Standing outside Jacob Nighthorse's house at quarter after three in the afternoon. The only thing compelling him to knock on the door was the fact that Henry's life could be at stake.
When Jacob answered the door and saw who it was, Walt was expecting him to slam the door in his face. Jacob's face showed that he expected Walt to accuse him of something, because that seemed to be the only time Walt ever showed up at his house uninvited.
"Something I can help you with?" His voice sounded like it was laced with venom, he was surely cross with the Sheriff.
"Henry's gone missing." Walt barely got those words out of his mouth before Jacob started to speak.
"And of course you think I have something to do with it." He started to shut the door when Walt stuck his foot inside.
"Yes, but not in the way you think." Walt said quickly, causing Jacob to stop his actions and look at him in a questioning manner. "I think you're next."
Jacob frowned deeply and crossed his arms. "What are you talking about?"
"I think Malachi is behind it. I think it's revenge for what you and Henry did." There was a moment of silence between the two men where they just stared at each other, each wondering the same thing; whether they could or couldn't trust the other man.
Jacob stepped aside and motioned for Walt to come inside his house. "What are you talking about?"
"We both know if nothing happened, you wouldn't have invited me in." Walt said, looking at him, his hands now resting on his hips. "Henry's life is at stake here, and soon yours could be too. You know how Malachi works."
Jacob looked the sheriff over for a moment, seemingly considering his options, surely he didn't mean for this to happen, Standing Bear was a good man who didn't deserve whatever Malachi had planned. "Alright." Once again, he fell silent for a moment. The sheriff waited, rather impatiently, for him to continue. "I guess it seems like you and I will be working on the same side."
"I guess so."
