He stood still, hands in his pockets, framed by the TARDIS. He looked on with pity and then stepped forward slightly.

"Master?" he asked softly. "How are you doing?"

He glared up at him from the floor. "Does it look as if I'm fine? I'm having the best bloody time of my life here. Idiot."

"Yeah….I've been called that quite a few times," the Doctor smiled slightly. "Need any help?"

"Nah. Gonna regenerate in a few. When did you change bodies?"

"Just before I crashed really. Quite funny actually. Regenerated, then tried to remember what I was doing. Turned out I was crashing. What do you think of the new body then?"

"Don't like it. Makes you look younger than me."

"Knew you'd be jealous. How did you get that knife through you?"

"Oh, well, you know. Bar fight got out of hand. But I am hungry," the Master smiled, lips stretching across teeth in a feral grin.

The Doctor's eyes widened slightly, but that was the only hint that something was wrong. "You're still dying."

The smile of the Master became gentler. "Gotcha. You were always so….gullible." He coughed weakly, his back braced against the wall.

"Back there….or then….thanks. Really. You saved the world you said you were going to destroy."

"I guess we're even then. I owe you nothing anymore."

The Doctor lifted a hand. "Come with me. We could travel the universe, through time. You and me together. Two Time Lords, the way it should be. We'd be unstoppable against anything. Me and a bunch of humans manage to save worlds so many times, I can't count it. A bunch of human kids manage to save both this world and others countless times. Imagine if we did it. I could take you anywhere….everywhere. Medusa Cascades, planet of the Ood, Asgard, Indigo 3. You and me….like it used to be. Come with me."

The blonde smiled once again, eyes fluttering closed. "No. I'd rather die."

"You've done that once before," a ghost of a smile flickered across the Doctor's face.

"Yeah…and I made you cry, if I remember correctly."

"Damn….I was hoping you'd forget that. Still refuse?"

"Yeah," the voice was broken and slightly harsh.

His hands were filmed in a golden light and the Master sighed as he looked at them.

"Go," he whispered. "I'd rather you not see this. I'd feel vunerable, regenerating now, you know."

The Doctor smiled and turned around. "Sure. But you know….if you ever change your mind…contact me sometime. With a mind like yours…"

"I'll keep that in mind," he whispered, too quiet for the Doctor to hear.

He watched the back of the suited man as he walked away. They had been best friends once. Now a large gap separated them. Maybe they could bridge it, but it would take a long time. And patience. He had that.

He gave another small smile.
