I don't own Naruto. Lol

Naruto knew it was all temporary.

He knew from the very beginning that whatever this was wouldn't last. Sakura must know too, but she would never voice it out.

It was eerily dark in Konoha that night as the cold wind nipped at their skins. He held her hand tight in his as they continued their walk through the winding streets of the village.

Naruto always hated the silence as they walked home. It was a constant reminder that it was all a facade.

They never tried to lengthen the walk, never took a longer route. She would never invite him in and he would never ask. Goodbyes were brief and he would walk home empty. All the pretenses of their so-called relationship ended as the night did.

There was no one to deceive after all.

Naruto never wanted a part of it. When she came to him, asking to be together, he knew he should have said no, but he didn't.

It was the only chance he had. It was the only way he could ever hold her and love her without it being as pathetic as it really is.

Naruto was in love with Sakura and she was in love with his best friend. The same best friend he promised he would bring back for her.

This relationship helped them in a way to cope with his absence. They both tried to fill in the holes that he had left.

Everyone was ecstatic when they got together. The bond they shared was always misinterpreted into something of love. For her part, anyways.

The whole rookie nine congratulated them one by one. Kakashi only shook his head and went back to reading his favorite book.

She declared her love for him so much. During every date and every time they saw each other. It was unnecessary and a lie that had hurt him more than it should. He knew better. It was as if she was convincing herself that she did.

Sakura will always love Sasuke and no matter how much Naruto tried, it will never change. He could hope, but even he wasn't that stupid.

Sasuke will come back and he'll bring him back for her. Just as it should be. They were meant for each other, he knew. They had forever lined up for them and all Naruto will ever have with her is this small piece of fleeting memories.

"Naruto?" she broke the silence, staring at him with her bright green eyes. "Are you okay?"

Under the pale moonlight, Sakura looked so beautiful. The tiredness under her eyes and the paleness of her lips didn't dampen her features at all.

He wished he could make her happy on his own. He wished so much he could bring light to her life by himself.

He looked at her and smiled.

Gently, Naruto took her shoulders and held her tight against him. He smiled against her hair before placing a small peck on her forehead. "Don't worry, it's just temporary."

This suddenly came to mind at 3am in the morning. I never bought the excuse in The Last that Naruto's love for Sakura was out of competition with Sasuke. I guess that's the only thing I didn't like about the movie, how they made Naruto's feelings for Sakura irrelevant just so they could pair him up better for Hinata. Sigh. Oh well.
