Chapter 1
The streets were dark and empty but as the rain began to fall a figure could be seen making its way down the street. The person's footsteps were rushed, walking through puddles, clutching something to its chest.
Reaching a large, old building at the end of the road the figure slowed and checked the plaque on the building.
St Marys Orphanage
For Girls
Making its way up the steps the figure loosened its hold on the bundle revealing a little girl no older than 2yrs old, sleeping despite the rain and bustle of movement. Lightening flashed showing a glimpse of the figures face- a young woman with tears running down her face.
The child stirred but did not wake. Rocking the child slowly the woman softly pressed her lips to the child's forehead and whispered, "I'm sorry princess. I really am but this is the only way to protect you and your father," more tears rushed down her face as she placed the child on the doorstep of the orphanage, "if it works I'll come back and me, you and daddy can be a family again. I promise."
The woman choked back a sob as she gave her baby one last kiss, "But if I don't come back princess, daddy will find you, he won't stop looking. We both love you so much. Good Bye Anastasia."
The woman rang the doorbell before disappearing into the night.
Moments passed and suddenly footsteps could be heard from inside the building. A light flickered on overhead and the door opened to reveal a middle-aged woman in sleepwear. Looking down the woman saw the child and quickly picked her up and brought her inside, away from the rain and the cold.
The woman checked the child for any injuries or notes but found nothing except a locket. It looked to be made from ordinary metal but had intricate designs on the front. It looked like the initials AS, surrounded by small flowers, turning the locket over the woman found an inscription.
Our Anastasia,
You are never alone
We are with you always
If love ever feels gone
The key is in your heart.
Love Mom & Dad
The woman tried to open the locket but there was no catch or any visible lock. Looking back at the child's face the woman saw she was now awake. Soft chocolate brown eyes stared at her.
"So, Anastasia? Welcome to your new your home."
Carrying the child upstairs the woman wondered who the child's parents were and where she came from.
