Beneath Cherry Blossoms
She had planned on stopping by the store on her way home. That was it. Walk in, buy milk, eggs and then be on her way home. That seemed so far away now.
His phone call had caught her just as she entered the store. "I just came back from the store, you can come straight home after work". She said fine and hung up. Why she hadn't returned to her car then she still can't explain.
The cherry blossoms bloomed and a thin layer of pale, pink petals lay spread on the ground. Something within her always broke this time of the year. Seeing everything come back to life, just a reminder of how her life never would, or could, return to the time before.
Sitting on the wooden bench, hearing children's laughter and mothers trying to calm their small ones, she felt time stand still. There was nothing she could do to start it again.
She'd been trying to ignore it all day, but now. It all came to her. The date she tried so badly to forget was coming back again. Every year she did her best in trying to repress the bottomless pit of darkness and sorrow that hit her, but it never seemed to heal. All the memories of that first summer came rushing back. The walks in the park. The late nights. The unimaginable happiness, that on some days were overshadowed by worry.
He'd be ten this year. Yet another year has gone by. A year lost. Was he happy? What was he doing? What was he like? For some reason everything hit her harder this year than before. All the questions. No answers. Or maybe she was just getting better at repressing the sadness and now it has come back with full blown effect.
Someone came up to her. A boy. He sat down on the bench next to her. Looked her in the eyes. Blue eyes mirrored hers. His gaze made her forget the world around her. It sent her heart racing. He looked into the core of her soul and hastily stood up lending her a closer look at him. His hair, dark blonde, was speckled with red streaks as the sun beamed through the leaves. A mole on his left cheek stood out on his fair complexion.
"Soon", he said.
She blinked, and he was gone.
She had planned on stopping by the store on her way home. Now her head was spinning. Her knuckles whitened as she was forced to hold a tight grip on the bench, just to remain seated. Her ears ringed as she reached for the thing that could make it all go away. She dialed the well-known numbers and after at few dial-tones heard the one thing that always grounded her.
"Yes?"
"Mulder, it's me."
End.
Hope you like it. Reviews make me (as everyone else) very happy :)
