The Look
She stood quietly in the corner watching them.
She'd not seen that look on his face for years. In fact, the more she looked at him the more she realised that she had never seen that look on his face. In all the years she had known Jack O'Neill she had never seen him so happy.
From her position she couldn't see who he was looking at but she could guess. She had known him long enough to know when he was in love. She had spent long enough hoping that he would look at her like that but she knew it wasn't to be. Her time with Jack had been and gone. In fact, she'd been the one to end it, the one to put that final nail in the coffin of their relationship. She still kicked herself about that now.
But she'd moved on. She was engaged now and she was happy. Jack O'Neill would always be in her heart but it no longer broke everytime she thought of him.
She knew she should be bitter and jealous. She'd loved him almost as long as she could remember and now he was happier with someone else than he had ever been with her. But she couldn't find those emotions with her. The only thing she could feel was happiness, happiness that after all he had been through in his life he had found love again.
She wondered if she should go over here and say hello. She decided against it, she didn't want to interrupt his evening.
As she began to walk to the door, she snuck one last glance at Jack and from her new poistion she could now see his date.
Recognition flashed in her brain. She'd only met her once and though it had been a brief meeting she would always remember it. Even through her shock at the time she had seen the spark between them.
She continued walking out ot her car and as she started the engine Sara O'Neill realised that even though she had been married to Jack for over 10 years and had borne his child, she had only been a practice run. Sure, Jack had loved her and Charlie and if Charlie hadn't died they would probably be together even now. However, she knew he would not have been achieving his potential. Jack O'Neill had an amazing capacity to love and it seemed that he had finally found someone that he felt was worthy enough to shower it all on.
One final thought flittered through her as she drove home to the waiting arms of her fiance - Sam Carter was one hell of a lucky woman!
