"Why did this happen...?"
Blake looked on as Ruby stood over the unconscious body of Weiss. Bandages riddled her body and tubes stuck out in several places.
"Weiss didn't deserve this..."
One wrong move.
One mix up.
That's all it took to put her in this condition.
Blake remembered it very clearly. Weiss stood in the large shadow of the monster. Her eyes were wide with fear. Her teamates screamed at her, telling her to run away or fight back. Anything. But Weiss didn't move until it was too late, the monster had already sliced her with its giant claws.
There was blood. Lots of it.
Ruby was the one to run to Weiss' body and carry it away to safety, while Yang and Blake took care of the monster. She could hear Ruby's frantic pleas. 'Weiss please stay with me.' 'Weiss don't pass out.' 'It'll be okay Weiss.'
Blake moved over next to Ruby, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Weiss will be okay, Ruby. The doctors said so."
Ruby tensed at this, clenching her fists. She said nothing.
"Come on Ruby. You need to rest."
That was the wrong thing to say.
Ruby whirled around to face her, her eyes filled with anger and betrayal.
"Why are you acting like this is okay? Weiss got hurt! She could die, no matter what the doctors say!"
Blake had never seen her this worked up before.
Ruby ran a hand through her hair. "And the teachers don't even care. They told us to keep moving. Continue with training."
Blake saw tears begin to form in Ruby's eyes.
"How are we supposed to keep moving? What are we to them, weapons? Just a tool to win and then thrown away when we're not useful anymore?"
This wasn't the way things should be. Ruby would never say things like this.
"That's not true. Professor Ozpin and the others care about us. You know that."
"Yeah, well, it sure doesn't feel that way..." Ruby slumped into one of the nearby chairs, slouching over and burying her face in her hands.
Blake didn't know how to comfort her. She was never good in these situations.
"I don't know if I can do this Blake. I just wanted to help people..." Blake cringed at how pitiful she sounded.
The black haired girl sighed. "Life isn't a fairytail, Ruby. You can't expect everything to end perfectly. People are going to get hurt, and you need to accept that. Weiss got hurt and there's nothing we can do to change that."
Ruby's head snapped up from her hands.
"How could you say that...?"
Ruby stood up and stomped in front of Blake.
"That's our teammate! Why aren't you upset by this!? Why are you saying these things!?"
Blake placed her hands on Ruby's arms.
"I know, Ruby. I know. She's our teammate, of course I'm upset. But I'm not going to let this stop me."
Ruby opened her mouth to say something, but Blake cut her off.
"Weiss wouldn't want us to worry about her so much. She would want us to move forward. And that's what we'll do."
Ruby stared at her. And then looked to Weiss.
She wouldn't want Ruby to fuss about her.
She'd probably yell at her if she knew she was making such a big deal over this.
"I guess...you're right..."
Ruby brushed the tears off her face, though they still poured from her eyes.
" 'm sorry Blake..." She mumbled.
Blake smiled at her. "It's fine. Come on. You need to sleep."
With a nod from Ruby, the two exited the room, taking one last look at Weiss for the night.
