Hats were an essential part of Ethan and Lyra's wardrobes. Ethan's hat was to set his midnight blue hair in place. He wore his hat backwards to allow his hair to stick out. His younger sister Dawn as well as Lyra complained that Ethan's hairstyle was too complicated. Lyra's chocolate brown hair was usually worn in two low pigtails; her large hat was worn over it.
Lyra's hat was given to her by Ethan. And in return Lyra gave Ethan a hat. That began the two's habit of wearing hats. Recently, both Ethan and Lyra opted for visors. Ethan wore his hair like before, while Lyra opted for two buns and grew her hair to waist length.
One could easily say that hats were the starting point of the friendship. Their visors were the exactly alike with Ethan's blue and Lyra's light pink. People called them the hat couple, for their liking of hats. But they didn't mind. It was fun wearing hats; it gave them a sense of security and sign of friendship.
