So this is a resurrection of an old fic I wrote back in grade 10 but then scrapped because i didn't like it anymore. but now i have inspiration for it again and i know how to change it to make it better so i decided to try again. This is a mass xover, so it involves a shitload of animes but I basically changed like everyone's backstory to revolve around being wronged by the Eidolons. And the YGO/GX characters are not duelists here-they are other things. Duel Monsters is not a thing here. Anyhoo...I'm writing this purely for myself.
Prologue:No Way Out
"I quit the Eidolons tonight."
Allen's hands froze at the sound of that deep, heavily accented voice emitting from the far corner of his bedroom. He looked up from the report he'd been working on over his steel desk, but he couldn't see even the smallest trace of the man who had spoken. That was fine-he was used to that. He could recognize that low, gruff baritone anywhere.
"You can't quit. You can't even retire. You know that,"the white-haired teen retorted bluntly, sure that his partner was just joking with him. No one voluntarily left the Eidolons-once you were drafted, you served until you died. You weren't even given a choice about whether to join or not.
The Eidolons were the new rulers of this world for a reason. They were overwhelmingly powerful and ruthless. And, most of all, they didn't allow their members to leave-no matter what.
There had only ever been one exception to that rule-and that man was still being hunted to the ends of the Earth.
Yu Kanda sauntered out of the shadows so that the dim light threw his pale, expressionless face into sharp relief. His long, cerulean hair was pulled into a straight ponytail at the base of his skull and, even so, still fell past his waist, reaching all the way to his knees, where his black boots began. The ebony robes he wore clung tightly to his tall, lean form and the silver rose cross gleamed over the left side of its chest-the mark of the legendary Exorcists.
Attached to his waist was a steel scabbard that hold the sword marking him as the Exorcists' leader:Mugen. Kanda's sword also marked him as one of the Eidolons' elite-which didn't explain why he would want to leave.
As always, Kanda's stormy grey eyes were cold and alert, as if constantly on the lookout for a threat;he had always excelled at their assassin's training.
His tone was deceptively stoic and unaffected when he responded to Allen's unspoken question. "I refuse to live under the rule of the people who ordered the death of my family."
"You can't-"his partner started to argue again, keen on convincing Kanda to stay-but then he realized what Kanda had just said. "What?"
The swordsman stared coldly back at him, crossing his arms. "You heard me;I finally found out that, while they may not have been the ones to deal the final blow, our boss was the one to order my family's murder,"
Allen blinked, eyes widening in a mix of shock and horror. "How do you know that?"he asked carefully, searching the elder's face for any trace of deception. There was none, though. This wasn't a joke-his partner was dead serious.
"It doesn't matter,"Kanda said tersely, unwilling to give any information away, wary of the very large chance that they were being watched. Even if they weren't, he had never really been one to share very much with anyone, not even Allen. "All that matters is that I'm done. They've been lying to me all this time and I won't be letting it go unpunished. Not anymore."
Allen fixed the elder male with a scrutinizing look, bottom lip catching between his teeth. Kanda definitely wasn't playing around-he really did intend to leave, regardless of the consequences. And there would be severe consequences-there was no doubt about that.
"You do know that this will make you even more of a social pariah than you already are, don't you?"he stated offhandedly, fully aware that that would be the least of the bluenette's problems if he made this decision. Choosing not to beat around the bush, he amended his statement into a more serious one, "If you defy them, they will never stop hunting you and you will never be able to lead a normal life again,"
"Like I said, it doesn't matter. Thanks to the Eidolons, I've never had a normal life anyways-but anything would be better than this,"Kanda retorted, apparently unconcerned. He'd joined the Eidolons in order to find the one who had been responsible for making him an orphan;discovering that it had been them all along changed everything. He wasn't going to be their pawn anymore. He'd rather spend the rest of his life on the run than let the ghosts use him a second longer.
Allen let out a bitter laugh. "Do you really think that?"the white-haired teen quipped with a shake of his head, "They'll be coming at you with everything they have,"
The elder male's inhumanly cold gaze sent a chill down Allen's spine when he uttered his next words: "And I will fight them with everything they taught me to be."
The other boy had to suppress a shudder. What the Eidolons had taught Kanda to be was a merciless killer, a predator the likes of which the world had never seen before. And, looking at him now, seeing the determination in his steely gaze, Allen truly believed that if the ghosts tried to kill this man, he would be taking a quite a few of them down with him.
Sighing because he knew he wouldn't be able to convince the elder to change his mind, he abandoned his attempts to get Kanda to see sense. "Where will you go?"he asked instead, his youthful face grim and resigned.
Kanda uncrossed his arms and placed a gloved hand on top of one of Allen's bare ones. "It's better that you don't know,"he said in a flat, mechanical tone. He allowed his and Allen's hands to remain touching for a full minute before turning away. "I've erased all traces of our relationship and of our past. You won't see me again," Because otherwise they'll come after you. Kanda didn't have to say the words aloud. They both knew what the stakes were and what would happen if the leader of the Eidolons ever discovered that they'd become partners in more than just business. The snake was generally one to discourage and exploit weaknesses of any sort.
"Wait,"Allen got to his feet as Kanda strode to the door, halting him in his tracks as he was about to leave. The British teen inhaled deeply before whispering in Japanese, "I love you,"
Kanda's voice was uncharacteristically quiet, but still emotionless and harsh when he replied in the same language, "And I you,"
With that, he departed, kicking the door shut behind him and vanishing as seamlessly as if he had never been there at all.
