ugh I hate editing on here
One of my 'prompts' what those are is I've got a huge list of prompts on LJ, things get written all at once, half writing exercise, half getting thoughts out. (Silence is a prompt) sometimes makes it hard to add more
anyway, spoilers for Sanctuary for None pt.1
this one just felt like it had to be written
"They all leave me in the end," Nikola brought his glass up to his lips then set it back down, "even the pidgeons left."
His voice gets quieter, "even her, my favorite, the white dove... New York, 1943... I liked her more than SCUI hotty what's-her-face."
Helen was almost out of her office when she heard that last part.
She remembered when the white bird left. Nikola actually cried that day. She wasn't sure she'd ever really seen him cry before.
Helen looked back, seeing the sadness, true sadness not just self-pity, in those striking blue eyes.
"Nikola?" Helen walked back over.
Nikola was quick to cover his feelings with a over dramatic sigh and a fresh sip from his glass.
"Stubborn brat," Helen muttered as she walked over and sat on the side of the chair.
Nikola looked up at Helen, "while I appreciate the attempt to cheer me up with the view don't you have work today? I used to have work." His teasing sounded so flat.
Helen slid her fingers into Nikola's fluffy hair, "she really was quite beautiful."
"Who?" Nikola whispered but already knew the answer.
Helen repeated the motion and smiled some as she felt Nikola cuddle his cheek to her side.
"She was, wasn't she?" Nikola closed his eyes, "she flew all that way to see me. She knew, she knew I wasn't some shriveled husk but never told. And then she told me she was leaving and never coming back."
"I remember," Helen whispered leaning a little and puting her arms around her best friend from so long ago, "you begged me to look for her since you couldn't leave."
"And you looked too," Nikola's voice was even softer, a stray tear slipping down his cheek, "I remember. You looked for two days for me and couldn't find her."
"I did," Helen kissed the top of Nikola's head and held tighter as she felt him hid against her stomach a little.
"Felt like I really did die then," Nikola whispered, "guess it made sense it's when everyone thought I did."
Helen nuzzled Nikola's ruffled hair, just for a moment, "not everyone leaves," she barely spoke then wiped his tear and rose from the chair.
Nikola blinked up at her confused.
Helen just smiled and walked from the office.
Nikola smiled a moment before resuming his misery.
